TERRE HAUTE, Ind -- Former Creighton assistant Kevin McKenna coached his Indiana State men's basketball team to a 62-54 win over Creighton on Wednesday in Terre Haute. The Sycamores improved to 6-0 at home this year and 7-5 overall (2-0 MVC), while Creighton dropped to 9-3 and fell to 0-2 in MVC play for the first time since 1993-94.
Creighton started slow for a second consecutive game, surrendering an 8-0 run with the score deadlocked at five. Dane Watts snapped the run with a jump-hook, only to see ISU extend its run to 18-7 after five straight points by Lamar Lee.
A Bluejay timeout sparked a 13-0 rally that gave CU the lead. The flurry began with two free throws by Josh Dotzler, a basket by Pierce Hibma and then three-pointers by Booker Woodfox, Casey Harriman and then Woodfox again. The Sycamores answered with five straight points from Todd McCoy to go ahead 23-20 and never trailed again.
ISU extended its 25-24 halftime lead with an 11-4 burst to begin the second half that included four straight Bluejay turnovers to open the stanza. Creighton would close within 36-31 on yet another trey from Woodfox, but would not draw closer than seven the rest of the way.
Woodfox led Creighton with a career-high 16 points, including five baskets from three-point range, and was the lone Bluejay with more than eight points. Watts led CU's 36-30 rebounding edge with a game-high seven caroms, while Nick Bahe tied a career-best with three steals. Creighton shot 37.3 percent from the field (19-51), 34.8 percent from three-point range (8-23) and made 8-of-13 at the line (61.5 percent).
Gabe Moore had 13 points, six rebounds and five assists for the Sycamores, while Harry Marshall added 10 points and six rebounds. Freshman Isiah Martin showed why he was last week's MVC Newcomer of the Week, recording four points, four rebounds and six blocks off the bench. ISU shot 46.8 percent from the floor (22-47), hit 4-of-15 three-pointers (26.7 percent) and made 14-of-19 free throws (73.7 percent).
Creighton will stay on the road and face Missouri State on Saturday at 7:05 pm in another game televised by KMTV. The game can also be heard on KXSP (Big Sports 590 AM).
