OMAHA, Neb. -- Creighton men's basketball improved to 2-0 with an 82-50 win over Arkansas-Pine Bluff on Thursday night. The hosts scored the first five points and never trailed while improving to 2-0 on the young season. UAPB is 0-3 as part of a season-opening 11-game road trip that has already seen them lose at Colorado and Texas A&M.
Creighton's 18 steals tied a school-record done three times previously, most recently Nov. 29, 2007 against Savannah State.
Creighton went on a 15-0 run late in the first half before a late basket by UAPB's Terrance Calvin ended the streak, putting the Bluejay lead at 45-26 at the half. CU shot 53.8 percent from the floor in the first half while holding Pine Bluff to 33.3 percent. The Golden Lions did lead on the glass, 21-14, at intermission.
Creighton's lead remained at 16 or larger the entire second half, with the 32-point final margin matching its largest of the night. Cavel Witter scored 13 of his game-high 15 points in the second half, making all four shots from the floor in just nine second-half minutes.
Witter led four CU players in double-figures with 15 points while also matching a career-high with four steals. Justin Carter had 13 points while Kenny Lawson Jr. and Kenton Walker had 10 points apiece. CU shot 46.3 percent from the floor (25-54) and 79.4 percent (27-34) at the line in the win. Ten of the 11 Bluejays to see action scored, including a basket from senior walk-on Dustin Sitzmann to close the scoring.
UAPB was paced by 15 points from Terrance Calvin, the only Golden Lions player with more than nine points. Lebaron Weathers had a game-best nine rebounds to lead UAPB's 40-30 victory on the glass. The Lions shot 32 percent for the game (16-50) and 68 percent from the line (17-25). UAPB had just four assists against 30 turnovers while struggling against Bluejay pressure all night long.
Creighton returns to action on Saturday with a 2:05 pm home game against Oral Roberts. The game will be televised on KMTV and be broadcast on radio on KXSP (Big Sports 590 AM).
