Men's Basketball Drives Past Jaguars, 71-60

OMAHA, Neb. -- Booker Woodfox had a game-high 17 points, including three-pointers on three straight second-half possessions, as the Creighton men's basketball team defeated Southern by a 71-60 score on Monday night in Omaha.
The game was the second of four contests Creighton will play in the Findlay Toyota Las Vegas Classic.
Creighton is now 8-2 with its season-high fifth straight win, while Southern (0-8) remained winless in eight games.
Creighton outscored Southern 12-1 in the first five minutes of the game and never trailed. Woodfox had five points and P'Allen Stinnett four points in the early spurt. The Jaguars did close within four (31-27) with about four minutes left in the first half before a three-point play from Cavel Witter ignited a 7-0 run that helped CU extend its lead to 40-29 at the half. Stinnett had five of CU's 11 steals in the first 20 minutes, as the Jays forced 18 turnovers in the first half.
Southern would get as close as six with 5:30 left in the second half before a Woodfox hit three consecutive treys in the span of 61 seconds to return CU's lead to 15 with 4:30 to go. Southern would score the final five points of the game to cut the final deficit to 11.
Woodfox led all players with 17 points, connecting on 5-of-9 three-pointers for the game. Witter added 15 points off the bench while Stinnett had a career-high seven steals to go with 14 points. Justin Carter led the team on the glass with seven rebounds to go with 10 points. Creighton shot 38.2 percent for the game but made just 7-of-28 from three-point range (25 percent). CU's 17 steals were one away from a school-record.
Southern was led by 16 points from Chris Davis, while Jazz Williams had 15 points off the bench. The Jaguars shot 45.2 percent for the game but made 29 turnovers, including 18 from its starting backcourt. Southern owned a 40-30 rebound advantage, getting a game-best 11 boards from Douglas Scott.
Creighton continues play in the Findlay Toyota Las Vegas Classic next Monday with a 9:30 pm (Central) game against Fresno State.
