OMAHA, Neb. ? Megan Neuvirth scored a career-high 26 points and added 13 rebounds, three steals and three blocked shots to lead the Creighton women's basketball team to a 61-58 win over UC Davis Saturday afternoon at the Omaha Civic Auditorium. In a game which featured 13 lead changes, Neuvirth scored eight of CU's final 10 points, including a pair of clutch three-pointers down the stretch to help the Jays improve to 3-6 on the year and snap a three-game losing streak.
Creighton carried a 30-27 lead into halftime, after nine lead changes in the opening 20 minutes of play. Neuvirth scored half of her 26 in the first half, despite making just 1-of-6 shots from three-point range. The Jays shot just 15.4 percent (2-13) from beyond the arc and 36.7 percent from the field in the opening half, compared to UC Davis hitting half of its first-half shots. It was 11 first-half UCD turnovers that led to 11 Bluejay points and the three-point edge at the break.
Three-pointers by Kelsey Woodard and Neuvirth, along with a jumper in the paint from Kellie Nelson helped CU build to its largest lead of the game, up 38-30 early in the second half.
UC Davis (4-5) answered with the game's next nine points to take a 39-38 lead with 12:30 to go. After exchanging baskets, the Aggies held their final lead of the game up 42-41 with 11:43 left. While UCD was never on top again, it did manage to even the game three more times, including at 54 with 3:36 to go after a Kasey Riecks three-pointer.
Not surprisingly, it was Neuvirth who answered the Aggie three-pointer with her own, giving the Jays a 57-54 lead with just over three minutes to play. UCD cut that lead to one, only to see Neuvirth put it back to three with a bucket inside of one minute to play following a two-minute scoreless drought in the game.
Paige Mintun, who led the Aggies with 24 points and seven rebounds, drained a pair of free-throws with 23 seconds left to bring the score to 59-58 in favor of the Jays. The Aggies then had to give four fouls in order to get CU to the free-throw line. Woodard earned a trip to the stripe with 10 seconds left and knocked down both of her freebies. Kristina Voss blocked an off-balance desperation three-pointer by Genevieve Costello at the buzzer to secure the Bluejay win.
Neuvirth made 9-of-19 shots from the field, including a career-best four three-pointers, while she finished 4-for-5 at the free-throw line. She added 13 boards for her third double-double of the year and seventh of her career.
Woodard nailed 5-of-12 three-pointers and finished with 17 points and a career-high seven assists. Chevelle Herring, who had scored in double figures in seven straight games, finished with six points and four assists.
CU finished with a season-high 11 steals and forced 19 UC Davis turnovers. The Jays out-rebounded the Aggies 30-28, including 13 offensive boards which led to 13 second-chance points. After making just 2-of-13 three-pointers in the first half, the Jays drained 7-of-17 shots from three-point range after halftime.
The Bluejays have no time to enjoy the victory, as they play host to Colorado State (3-6) Sunday at 2:05 p.m. The game marks the first time since 1991 that the Jays have played home games on consecutive days.
