OMAHA, Neb. - Creighton third baseman Steve Winkelmann has been selected by CollegeBaseballInsider.com as its Co-National Player of the Week, the website announced Wednesday. The senior collected 17 RBIs in the Bluejays' five games last week, including three home runs and two doubles. Winkelmann shares the award with Arkansas first baseman Aaron Murphree.
On Monday, Winkelmann was named the Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Week. His red-hot play at the plate began with an eight-RBI performance in a doubleheader sweep of Memphis last Wednesday. The Gross High grad hit a grand slam in game one, then blasted a three-run homer in the nightcap as the Jays beat the Tigers, 11-3 and 10-8.
The former junior college player of the year continued his torrid pace with two hits, including a three-run double, against Western Carolina at the Rice Classic on Friday. Winkelmann then drove in five more runs on Saturday as the Bluejays routed Michigan State, 15-1. He wrapped up the week with a solo home run against No. 6 Rice.
Winkelmann and the Bluejays are set to open at home this weekend with a four-game set against Chicago State at the CU Sports Complex. Game one of the series will be Friday, March 14, at 4 p.m.
