
Baseball Routs Michigan State, 15-1

Junior third baseman Steve Winkelmann drove in five runs on the day, increasing his
four-game total to 16, as the Jays took advantage of four
The Jays jumped to a 3-0 first-inning
lead, as CU was aided by two Spartan errors in the inning. Winkelmann laced an
RBI single to center and shortstop Vicente Cafaro added a sacrifice fly for CU in the opening frame. Second baseman Michael Lam then gave Creighton a 4-0
lead in the fourth inning, as he doubled and scored on a sacrifice fly by
Winkelmann.
The game was broke open in the
fourth inning, as Creighton tallied six unearned runs in the frame to take a
10-0 lead. The big hit was a bases-clearing double by Winkelmann, his second in
as many days, to score Knight, Lam and first baseman Darin Ruf. Nordgren added an RBI single, as did left fielder Joe Servais, who recorded two hits in
the inning.
The six-run frame marked the sixth
time in the last seven games the Jays have tallied at least three runs in the
fourth inning. CU has scored 29 of its 88 total runs this season in the fourth
inning.
Creighton added three runs in the
bottom of the seventh on a three-run double by Nordgren, set up by a Knight
single and two walks. MSU pitching walked nine Jays in the game.
The Bluejays ended the scoring with
two more tallies in the bottom of the eighth.
Hauer was efficient in improving to
2-0 as a starter. The left hander struck out eight and walked two in lowering
his ERA to 3.45. Senior Kevin Dooley
and junior Ty Johnston combined to
pitch three scoreless innings of relief, allowing just one hit.
The game was delayed 22 minutes in
the bottom of the third inning by a glare delay, as the sun reflected off a
neighboring building causing the players' vision to be impaired.
Creighton will face the sixth-ranked
Rice Owls, the tournament host, at 1 p.m. on Sunday. Rice defeated
