With its
fifth straight win, Creighton improves to 20-7 overall and 6-2 in the MVC.
Bradley falls to 12-14 and 3-5.
Starting
pitcher Zak Moore (3-2) picked up
the victory, allowing three runs on six hits in 5.1 innings. Starting right
fielder T.J. Roemmich came in to
pitch the final 3.2 innings, picking up his first career save with a scoreless
outing.
Home runs
by seniors Michael Lam and Joe Servais highlighted CU's seven-run
third frame. After the first two batters in the inning were retired, Lam hit a
1-1 pitch over the wall in left field to even the score at 2-2.
Darin Ruf and Steve Winkelmann followed Lam's round tripper with back-to-back
infield singles. Designated hitter Vicente Cafaro then put CU on top with a double off the wall in left field to bring
home Ruf.
After a
walk to Roemmich loaded the bases, Servais delivered the crushing blow of the
inning. The catcher hit his first homer as a Bluejay, a grand slam over the
left field wall, to make it 7-2.
A Brett Mieras double followed by an RBI
single from shortstop Elliot Soto
increased the lead to 8-2 and concluded the Jays' big inning.
Bradley got
one run back in the bottom of the third on an RBI double by Jim Clayton, but CU
responded with four unearned runs in the top of the fourth, again all with two
outs.
Bradley
center fielder Dan Brewer committed two errors in the inning. A dropped flyball
allowed two runs to score. Mieras then ripped an RBI single to score Roemmich.
On the play, Brewer overthrew third base to allow Servais to come around and
make it 12-3.
Neither
team scored over the final five innings, as Roemmich and BU's Tyler Thornton
pitched solidly in relief.
Leadoff
batter Robbie Knight got things
started for the Jays in the top of the first, as he came around to score the
first run for the second straight day. Knight singled to left field, stole
second base, advanced to third on a Lam groundout and then crossed home on a
wild pitch.
For the
second consecutive game, Bradley answered with two runs in the bottom of the
first to take a 2-1 lead. Colby Luttrell ripped an RBI double to right center
field, and Clayton followed with a sacrifice fly to drive in Brewer. Brewer also
scored on Clayton's double in the third.
Bradley
starter Brad Altbach (1-4) suffered the loss, allowing eight runs on eight hits
in three innings. Chris Wright allowed four runs on two hits in an inning of
work.
Mieras went
3-for-5 in the contest, one of five Jays with multi-hit games. Winkelmann,
Cafaro, Roemmich and Servais each plated two runs.
The Jays
will look for the series sweep when the teams meet Sunday at 1 p.m.
