OMAHA, Neb. -- Non-conference match-ups featuring Dayton, Saint Joseph's, New Mexico, Oral Roberts, UALR, Nebraska and Fresno State highlight Creighton's 2008-09 men's basketball schedule, announced today by head coach Dana Altman. The slate includes 17 home games, 12 road games and two neutral-site games in Las Vegas, Nev., leading up to the State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Tournament in St. Louis, Mo.
The schedule includes 14 games against postseason teams from a year ago, including five match-ups against NCAA Tournament selections. Seven of Creighton's first eight opponents advanced to the postseason or won 20 or more games last winter, including a 24-9 New Mexico squad that comes to Omaha on Nov. 16 for the regular-season opener.
Other highlights of the non-conference home schedule include Oral Roberts on Nov. 22 and Dayton on Dec. 10. Creighton will also host a game during the annual ESPNU BracketBusters series on Feb. 21.
The Bluejays play three non-conference road games, all against teams that won 20 or more games last year. The Jays travel to face Arkansas-Little Rock on Nov. 25 before playing a Nov. 29 game at Nebraska. CU will also travel to Philadelphia, Pa. to play Saint Joseph's on Dec. 6 in a battle of Jesuit schools. That game will take place in one of the nation's most historic arenas, The Palestra.
Creighton also hosts two rounds of the Findlay Toyota Las Vegas Classic, Dec. 13 and Dec. 15, before heading to Las Vegas for the final two games of the event. Creighton opens play in Las Vegas with Fresno State and plays either DePaul or Saint Louis one night later.
As they have in the past, Creighton will also play the other nine schools in the Missouri Valley Conference both home and away. The Jays' MVC docket opens Dec. 28 with a home game against Wichita State. Creighton's first Valley road test will come Dec. 31 at Indiana State. Creighton's Senior Day will be held on Saturday, Feb. 28 following a home game against Illinois State. A start time and potential television coverage for that game won't be determined until mid-February by the league office.
Creighton's bid for a seventh State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Tournament title in the last 11 years will be played at Scottrade Center in St. Louis, Mo. The tournament runs from March 5-8, with the final televised nationally on CBS for the fourth straight year.
Creighton's exhibition schedule, television schedule and start times will be listed on the men's basketball schedule page at http://www.gocreighton.com as those items become finalized in the coming weeks.
Creighton's 22-11 record last year extended its league record with a 10th consecutive 20-win season. The Jays will return 10 lettermen and three starters in search of a 12th straight postseason.
