About the Jays
The 4-2-0 Creighton women's soccer team is a mix of youth and experience. The squad, which had a record of 11-8-2, is coming off a 2007 MVC Tournament Championship.
Leading the team in scoring are two of three preseason all-MVC selections (Emily Orbell, Marcy Gans and Lindsay Vaught). Gans leads the team with nine points while Orbell is second with five. Kristen Casey, who was the first female Bluejay to play every minute of the season in goal last season, leads the team in wins with four.
The team is hoping to make back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances for just the second time in program history.
Last Week Recap
Last weekend Creighton traveled to St. Paul, Minn., for the Regina Moench Memorial Tournament. At the tournament, the team went 0-2-0. The Bluejays lost a heart breaker, 2-1, to Northeastern in double overtime on Friday, and were shutout against Minnesota on Sunday, 3-0.
In Friday's game against Northeastern, Lindsay Vaught scored in the third minute on a pass from Marcy Gans, to put the Creighton advantage at 1-0. It was Vaught's first goal of the season and Gans' third assist.
In Sunday's game against Minnesota, the Bluejays were held in check offensively, as they did not register a shot until the 48th minute, when freshman Macy Mauer had an attempt go wide. Junior Mary Zapapas had Creighton's only shot on goal of the day, unleashing a shot in the 73rd minute. Overall the Bluejays were outshot 31-5, their largest deficit of the year. Sunday was also the first time since Aug. 29, 2004 the Bluejays did not have a corner kick.
Offensive Struggle
In Sunday's loss at Minnesota, the Bluejays generated just one shot on goal. That total is the lowest since Aug. 30, 2003 against Buffalo, when the team generated just one shot on goal as well.
Streak Enders
This weekend, saw many Creighton streaks come to an end. Below are the streaks that fell while at the Regina Moench Memorial Tournament:
Marcy Gans scoring in every game this season, after not scoring a point against Minnesota.
Leading or tied at halftime in 16 straight games. On Sunday at Minnesota the Bluejays fell behind at the midway point, 1-0, for the first time since Sept. 30, 2007 at Arizona.
Creighton going undefeated in its last 10 games when scoring at least one goal. Creighton lost 2-1 Friday against Northeastern.
Avoiding back-to-back losses since Sept. 28-30 of last year.
The Bluejays having the same starting lineup in every game this season. Nicole DeLue got the start for Emily Orbell on Sunday, and Mary Zapapas got the nod for Beth Fyles.
Having at least one corner kick in regulation since Oct. 28, 2004 against Drake, and having at least one corner kick in a game since Aug. 29, 2004 against Nebraska.
Generating at least one shot in a half since Nov. 16, 2007 against USC. Creighton did not register a shot in the first half against Minnesota.

Gans is Gold
Sunday's loss against Minnesota marked the first time this season that senior Marcy Gans has not scored a point. Dating back to last season the Bluejays are 14-2-1 when Gans scores a point and 1-8-1 when she doesn't.
Double Heartbreaker
On Friday against Northeastern, the Bluejays went into double overtime for the second time this season. After falling 2-1 on the result of a penalty kick, Creighton dropped its first double overtime match since Sept. 1, 2006. The loss snapped a streak of five straight double overtime games without a loss, 1-0-4.
Streak Ender
With its 2-1 loss on Friday against Northeastern, Creighton lost for the first time in 11 games when scoring at least one goal. In the last 30 games they've scored at least one goal, the Bluejays are 22-5-3.
Break Time
When Creighton found itself behind at halftime on Sunday, 1-0, it was the first time in 17 games it had happened. Over that time, the Bluejays were 10-4-2.
Irish Alumni
This Sunday against Iowa, two former Peoria Notre Dame alumni will face off.Bluejay freshman Carey Dahlquist, and Hawkeye freshman Rachel Blakesley played together the last four years for their high school team.
During their time there, the Irish went 80-16-5, including four consecutive conference championships and two State Elite Eight appearances.
Home Cooking
Morrison Stadium has been friendly to Creighton, where the team is 9-1-1 in its last 11 contests. The span is the best since Morrison Stadium opened in 2003. The Creighton record for best home span is a 21-1-1 record from Oct. 4, 1992- Sept. 10, 1995.
Record Setting Day
On Aug. 31 against UC Riverside, several Morrison Stadium records were either tied or broken. Marcy Gans tied two records by equaling the single-game stadium mark for goals (2) and points (4). Kristen Casey, who extended her record of career shutouts at Morrison Stadium to 12 on Aug. 29 against North Dakota State, had a single-game record nine saves on Sunday.
MVC Players of the Week
On Aug. 25 Kristen Casey was named MVC Defensive Player of the week as well as MVC Scholar Athlete of the Week., for her work in goal in the first two games, going 2-0-0.
On Sept. 2 Gans received MVC Offensive Player of the Week honors, as well as MVC Scholar Athlete of the Week honors for her efforts against North Dakota State and UC Riverside, scoring two goals and an assist.
All Valley Performers
On Aug. 19, the Missouri Valley Conference released its preseason poll, Creighton was picked to finish in first place, receiving four first place votes.
Individually, the Bluejays tied Evansville and Missouri State for tops in the league with three preseason All-MVC selections. Making the team were sophomore midfielder Emily Orbell, senior forward Marcy Gans and senior midfielder/forward Lindsay Vaught.
In Search of 100
Creighton head coach Bruce Erickson has built the Bluejay women's soccer program into an annual MVC contender. In his 10th season at the helm Erickson is 96-78-18. For his career he is a combined 166-139-24 in almost 17 years.
Welcome Newcomers
This season Creighton features the most freshmen on its team since 2001. The 2008 Bluejays will have 12 college rookies, matching the 2001 squad which also featured a dozen.
Morrison Record Setter
Last season, senior Marcy Gans set a Morrison Stadium single season record for points scored with 14. Gans broke her own record after setting the original mark with 13 in 2005. Below are all of Gans' Morrison Stadium Records.

Continued Success
For Marcy Gans, setting records is nothing new. Last year, her 13 goals and 29 total points were the most by a Bluejay since 1998. Gans also became the first player in league history to earn MVC tournament MVP honors twice in her career.
Morrison Record Setter Part 2
Two weeks ago, senior goalkeeper Kristen Casey added more records to an already impressive career at Morrison Stadium. On Aug. 29 against North Dakota State, Casey posted her 14th career shutout overall, and her 12th career shutout at Morrison Stadium. Below are her Morrison Stadium Records

Career High
After scoring two goals in the season opener against South Dakota, senior Nicole DeLue tied her career high for goals in a season, when she scored two in 2006. On Aug. 24 against South Dakota State, DeLue added an assist to tie her career high for total points in a season with five.
Another Career High
Junior Mary Zapapas was the only Bluejay to score a goal in both games the first weekend (Aug. 22-24). Her two goals are a season high during her time at Creighton. Prior to joining the Bluejays, Zapapas scored 11 goals and had 4 assists in 2006 at Middle Tennessee.
Fifth Time's the Charm?
After reaching the NCAA Tournament for the fourth time in the last six years last season by virtue of winning the MVC Tournament, the Bluejays will be looking this year to post their first NCAA Tournament victory. Last year Creighton fell 3-0 to eventual National Champion USC.
A trip to the NCAA Tournament this year, would be just the second time in the program's history that the team has made the tournament in back to back seasons (2004-05).
National Pride
The Bluejays will be without the services of junior defender Eden Hingwing this season. Hingwing is redshirting the season to train and play for the Canadian National Team in the U-20 World Cup (Nov. 19- Dec. 7).
What's in a Name
Last season, the Bluejays had three sisters on the team in Ally, Katy and Anne Peetz. This season the team has a new set of sisters as senior Marcy Gans and freshman Ariel Rank continue the family tradition.
Scouting Portland State

Tough Competition
Through the first month of the season, the Vikings have played elite teams in the nation. In its first six games, Portland State has played No. 1 USC and No. 3 UCLA, falling 2-0 against the Trojans before losing 7-0 against the Bruins.
Returning Contributions
Although Portland State features 13 newcomers on the roster, it does have experience in its returners. Last season's top two point scorers return in Dolly Enneking (2 G, 6 A) and Tarah Authier (5 G). Enneking is second on the team in scoring this year with two points, (1 G, 0 A).

Senior Leaders
The Hawkeyes will have a young team this year, as only two seniors are on the roster. However those two have been quite productive during their time in Iowa City. Stephanie Hylink and Kelsey Shaw have combined for 19 goals and 11 assists during their time at Iowa.
National Leaders
Iowa features a tough matchup for any team, as the Hawkeyes have players that are nationally ranked in the top 20 in different statistical categories.
Goalkeeper Emily Moran is ranked 19th in the nation in save percentage with a .929 clip.
Freshman Morgan Showalter is ranked 20th nationally in assists per game with 0.80.
