
No. 23 Kansas Too Much for Creighton

LAWRENCE, Kan. - Kansas rolled to a 77-56 win over the Creighton women's basketball team Sunday afternoon at Allen Fieldhouse. The 23rd-ranked Jayhawks were led by redshirt freshman Angel Goodrich who finished with a career-high 20 points, adding eight assists to help move KU to 7-2 on the year and drop the Bluejays to 5-3. Kellie Nelson led the Jays with a season-high 14 points and eight rebounds, while three other Bluejays scored in double figures.
The Jayhawks opened the game with a 25-8 burst and led by as many as 19 in the opening half, when they doubled the scored up 38-19 with just under four minutes left in the opening half. KU forced 14 first-half turnover by the Bluejays, while they held an impressive 18-2 advantage in points off turnovers through the first 20 minutes and led 43-25 at the break.
The Bluejays put together a 13-5 run to start the second half and get the score within 10 points, down 48-38 with less than five minutes elapsed in the second half. The visitors would continue to chip away and get within eight points, down 52-44 with 12:27 left in the game. They would again get within eight points with 11:19 to play and trailed 57-48 with 9:53 to play after Nelson made her final field goal of the game.
Kansas would then rattle of the next 14 points of the game as the Bluejays cooled off from the field. After making seven of their first 10 shots from the floor after halftime, the Bluejays would end the game by making only three of their final 17 attempts. A seven-minute stretch without a Creighton field goal allowed the nationally-ranked home team to build to its largest lead of the game, up by 23 with just over four minutes remaining.
In becoming the first Bluejay opponent to score more than 70 points this year, the Jayhawks shot 42.1 percent (24-57) from the field and 50 percent (5-10) from three-point range. KU also drained 24-of-28 free-throws, including their first 13 attempts, to finish shooting 85.7 percent at the line. The Jayhawks also out-rebounded the Bluejays 40-38.
Goodrich entered the game averaging six points and 8.4 assists per game, as the rookie would double her previous career-best to lead KU with 20 points. She also added eight assists and three steals. Aishah Sutherland added a double-double with 15 points and a game-high 10 rebounds. Krysten Boogaard finished with 10 points and National Player of the Year candidate Danielle McCray finished below her season scoring average, with 18 points for Kansas.
Nelson made a career-high seven field goals on a career-best 15 attempts in the loss, to lead all Jays with a season-high 14 points. She also topped the Jays with a season-best eight rebounds. Sam Schuett added 13 points for CU, while Kelsey Woodard chipped in 10 points and six rebounds. Kelsey Crites came off the bench to add 11 points in 16 minutes for the Jays.
Creighton tied its season-high with 21 turnovers for the second straight game, as KU out-scored the Jays 24-5 in points off turnovers.
The Bluejays will take a week off for finals before returning to action to conclude their three-game stretch against ranked Big 12 opponents. CU hosts No. 16 Oklahoma at D.J. Sokol Arena next Sunday, Dec. 20, at 2:05 p.m.
