
Men's Basketball Pushes Past Savannah State, 77-62

OMAHA, Neb. -- Creighton started the game on a 16-2 run and never trailed while posting a 77-62 victory over Savannah State on Wednesday night at Qwest Center Omaha.
Creighton improved to 4-5 on the year with its fourth home win in as many tries, while Savannah State dropped to 4-7.
Kenny Lawson Jr. scored on each of his first three shots, helping CU to an early 6-2 lead. Lay-ups from Darryl Ashford and Wayne Runnels followed to make it 10-2, with Runnels finishing off a traditional three-point play to make it 11-2. P'Allen Stinnett would then drain a three-pointer before tipping in a Lawson miss to make it 16-2. CU's lead would remain in double-figures the rest of the evening. Creighton led 27-15 at the half.
The second half saw Ethan Wragge warm up from long-range. The true freshman hit three triples in a span of 2:46 as CU built its largest lead of the night at 57-36 with 11:01 remaining. The Tigers would claw within 12, but get no closer the rest of the night.
Wragge had 18 points to lead four Jays in double-figures. Stinnett had 10 points and a career-best nine rebounds, while Lawson Jr. (12) and Wayne Runnels (11) also scored in double-digits. Creighton shot 46.9 percent for the game (23-49), including 40.0 percent (10-25) from three-point range. CU also made 21-of-26 free throws, good for 80.8 percent.
Savannah State was led by 23 points in 22 minutes off the bench from Darius Baugh. The Tigers shot 42.4 percent from the field (25-59), 28.6 percent from downtown (6-21) and 66.7 percent (6-9) at the line. SSU also outrebounded Creighton 33-31.
Creighton returns to action on Saturday at 8 pm when it plays at No. 19 New Mexico. That game can be heard on Big Sports 590 AM and will be televised on The Mtn.
