PHOENIX, Ariz. - Creighton fell to 0-5 Friday afternoon, as it lost to Dayton (2-2) by a score of 3-1, at Marich Field.
The Flyers broke a 0-0 tie in the bottom of the eighth as they got runners on first and second with one out. Back to back doubles from Zach Jacob and Aaron Dunsmore off Bluejay reliever Kirk Clark made the score 3-0.
Creighton's best rally of the day came in the ninth inning as Scott Thornburg hit his first career double to lead off the inning. Following a Robbie Knight single, putting runners at the corners, Elliot Soto brought in Thornburg on a fielder's choice. Unfortunately for the Jays Darin Ruf flew to left before Vicente Cafaro struck out to end the game.
Dayton threatened in the second inning as runners were on first and third with just one out. Starter Jeremy Hauer struck out Flyer left fielder Max Navalinski before inducing a ground ball to catcher Scott Dunwoody to end the threat.
Hauer then got the Jays out of another jam in the bottom of the fourth as Aaron Dunsmore led off the inning with a double to left centerfield. Hauer then struck out the next two Dayton hitters before getting Dunwoody to line to third baseman Jimmy Swift to end the inning, and keep the score at 0-0 heading into the fifth.
Hauer threw 6.0 scoreless innings. He allowed five hits while striking out five and walking one.
NOTES: Creighton did not get a baserunner on until the top of the fourth when Elliot Soto singled to right...The Bluejay's 0-5 record is their worst start to a season since the 1996 season when the team was also 0-5...Dayton starter Burny Mitchem has now thrown 15.0 scoreless innings to start the season.
