ST. LOUIS, Mo. -- Creighton University men's basketball sophomore Kenton Walker is one of 10 student-athletes honored with the Missouri Valley Conference's Good Neighbor Award. The award was created by league officials in an effort to honor model student-athletes.
In order to be eligible for the award, the student-athlete must be in good academic standing, must demonstrate good citizenship through good sportsmanship and significant community service, and must participate in a sport, during the season of recognition. The Valley will recognize 10 student-athletes three times annually (fall, winter, spring), for a total of 30 honorees. Institutions select their Good Neighbor Award honorees.
The honorees include Jenny Van Kirk, Bradley; Kenton Walker, Creighton; Matt Jurysta, Drake; Shannon Novosel, Evansville; Kristi Cirone, Illinois State; Kelsey Luna, Indiana State; Roxy Stiles, Missouri State; Abby Girard, UNI; Kelly Dvorak, Southern Illinois; Marcy Sudbeck, Wichita State
Fall honorees included Brian Lock, Bradley; Jeff Thayer, Creighton; Theodore Scheisman, Drake; Kellee Widener, Evansville; MC Richmond, Illinois State; Kelli Whitaker, Indiana State; David Arkin, Missouri State; Ben Schmidt, Northern Iowa; Larry Warner, Southern Illinois; Katie Niggemeyer, Wichita State
A sophomore from San Diego, Calif., Walker is among Creighton's most active student-athletes that compete during the winter. In addition to helping with the Teammates mentoring program, Walker also participates in the Jays Night Out, the Just Read program and does community outreach through clinics while serving as a strong role model for young men and women.
Walker averages 5.0 points and 3.8 rebounds per game for Creighton this winter. He has played in 29 games, all as a reserve, and averages 14.8 minutes per game. Walker shoots a team-best 54.4 percent from the field and is third in the MVC with 37 blocked shots.
Creighton (24-6, 13-4 MVC) closes the regular-season on Saturday at 1:05 pm with a game against Illinois State (22-7, 11-6 MVC). The game will be broadcast on KXSP (Big Sports 590 AM) and televised nationally by ESPN2. Seniors Booker Woodfox, Dustin Sitzmann and Josh Dotzler will be honored following the contest in a post-game ceremony.
