Busting onto the Scene
Several Jays are making an immediate impact. Most notably was Brittney Neumann, who scored her first three goals of her career in the form of a natural hat trick on Friday. Neumann scored three consecutive goals less then 10 minutes apart in the second half of Friday's game against South Dakota. Also scoring her first career goal was Laura Nasseri, who scored the fourth goal of the first half. Sarah Kendall also scored her first career goal last Sunday at South Dakota State.
Neumann Stars
Several Morrison Stadium records were tied or broken during Friday evening's 8-0 win over South Dakota. Brittney Neumann's three goals tied the record set last season by Marcy Gans and her eight points (3g/2a) set the Morrison Stadium record and now ties her for third on the Creighton single game point list.
More Marks
As a team, the Bluejays put up 21 total points (8g/5a) and flung 21 shots on goal in the victory over USD. Those two marks both were good for Morrison Stadium records.
Non-Conference Nuisance
Creighton has had a great deal of success during the non-conference part of its schedule. The Jays are 7-0-1 in their last eight non-conference regular season games to go along with a 18-8-1 mark in those contests since the beginning of the 2007 season.
Familiar Faces
Two former Bluejays will be patrolling inside and outside the lines on Sunday. Ariel Rank, a member of the 2008 Bluejay squad, is expected to start at one of the defender spots. The second former Bluejay affiliated with UMKC is Marcy Gans. Gans finished her career in 2008 as Creighton's all-time leading scorer with 38 goals and 15 assists for 91 career points.
Shutout Streaks
Alicia Montgomery's first three games have resulted in three shutout victories for the Jays, as her scoreless streak has now run up to 197:15. As a team, the Bluejays defense has not allowed a goal in nearly 465 minutes (464:50), as both marks date back to last season.
Nothing Gets By Her
Alicia Montgomery saw limited time as a freshman last season, biding her time behind senior keeper Kristen Casey. Montgomery made one start last year and now has three shutouts in four career starts. In just under 400 minutes played, Montgomery has posted a 0.21 GAA and .963 save percentage.
Morrison Mastery
With the win over South Dakota Friday, the Jays kept up their impressive unbeaten streak at home. The Jays are 11-0-1 in their last 12 non-conference matches at Morrison Stadium, with their last loss coming in the form of a 1-0 setback to Iowa on Sept. 21, 2007.
Breaking 'em In
Seven Bluejays made their Creighton debut last weekend, while four more saw their first collegiate time on the pitch. Kaitie Jo Swanson, Rachelle Holt, Alexa Lind and Lauren Wong all made their debuts against South Dakota on Friday.
10-Spot
Creighton cracked the top-10 of the first NSCAA Great Lakes Regional Poll on Tuesday. The Jays checked in at 10th, behind seven Big 10 schools, Wisconsin-Milwaukee and Toledo.
Knotted Up
After 21 seasons of women's soccer at Creighton, the 2009 edition became the first team to start the season with a draw. The 0-0, double overtime draw with Iowa State moved the Jays to 11-9-1 in season openers. The tie also brought the record in home openers to 13-5-3.
Hardware Handlers
Despite losing some key parts, the Jays bring back several award winners. Orbell was named to the All-MVC second team and Zapapas earned honorable mention recognition. Two CU sophomores landed on the all-freshman team last year, as Macy Mauer and Erin Gunther were named as a midfielder and defender respectively.
On Tap
After Sunday's match, the Bluejays will have a full slate of games for the upcoming week. On Tuesday, the Jays will head north to Fargo to take on North Dakota State. The weekend will see the Jays host two more non-conference opponents in the form of Cal State Northridge on Friday at 7:00 p.m. and Lamar on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
Topping the Summit
Creighton has been nemesis number one for the Summit League in its short existence. The Bluejays have faced five current and one future member of the conference throughout their existence, putting up a 25-1-3 all-time record against those six teams. The Jays have the following records against Summit squads:
• Centenary - 1-0-1
• Oral Roberts - 2-0-1
• South Dakota State - 6-0-0
• Western Illinois - 10-0-1
• North Dakota State - 3-1-0
• South Dakota - 3-0-0
The lone loss against NDSU came on September 14, 2007 in Fargo.
