Scouting Creighton
Creighton is 1-2 on the young season, having beaten Texas Tech (3-0) but losing to No. 10 Illinois (0-3) and No. 6 Nebraska (0-3).
Creighton returns six letterwinners and four starters from last year's team that finished 18-9 overall and second in the Missouri Valley Conference with a 15-3 league record.
Honorable-mention All-American Jessica Houts is back for her senior season and off to a strong start. She owns team-best averages of 2.78 kills and 1.44 blocks per set and last weekend claimed all-Tournament Team accolades at the Bluejay Invitational.
Also earning all-Tourney honors for Creighton last weekend was libero Nayka Benitez, who has averaged 4.44 digs and 0.33 aces per set in her first action at the Division I level.
Creighton graduated four seniors last season that enjoyed highly-decorated careers. Korie Lebeda (5,281 assists, 1,130 digs) was a three-time all-MVC pick and started all 119 matches of her career, while Amanda Cvejdlik (1,029 kills, 221 blocks) was also a first-team all-Valley selection as a senior. Bianca Rivera (1,118 digs) departs after two record-setting seasons at libero, while Carolyn Decker's (651 kills, 629 digs, 89 aces) five-year run also came to a close.
Creighton is picked fourth (of 10) in the MVC this fall, with Houts earning preseason all-Valley accolades.
The Bluejays average 11.44 kills, 1.00 aces, 11.56 digs and 2.67 blocks per set while hitting .231 as a team.
Scouting Florida International
Florida International is 2-1 on the season after beating Western Carolina (3-0) and Northwestern (3-2) before falling at #21 Kentucky (3-0).
The Golden Panthers return all six starters from last season's team that finished 28-7 and earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament.
Three-time All-American Yarimar Rosa is the unquestioned star of the team after averaging an NCAA-best 5.21 kills per set last season. A three-time Sun Belt Conference Preseason Player of the Year and a standout on the Puerto Rican National Team, Rosa missed last weekend due to injury and her return date remains in question.
FIU's setter, Natalia Valentin is also a preseason all-SBC selection after averaging 10.90 assists per set last fall.
With Rosa out of action last weekend, Olga Vergun (3.64 kps.) and Isadora Rangel (3.45 kps.) stepped up to lead the offense.
Florida International averages 12.18 kills, 1.00 aces, 15.64 digs and 1.55 blocks per set while hitting .163 as a team.
Scouting Lipscomb
Lipscomb also enters the Jayhawk Invitational with a 2-1 mark after playing at the Comcast Lady Vol Classic in Knoxville, Tenn., last weekend. That included 3-0 wins over Tennessee Tech and Western Kentucky as well as a narrow 3-0 loss to host Tennessee.
The Lady Bisons, who were 21-11 last year and second in the Atlantic Sun Conference (17-3), return five starters from a year ago.
Alex Kelly takes top billing after averaging 4.09 kills per set last season. She began her senior season by averaging 4.67 kills, 3.89 digs and 1.11 blocks per set while hitting .360 last weekend.
Kelly was joined on the All-Tournament Team by Jake Pease, who dished 11.56 assists and 3.00 digs per set.
Lipscomb averages 14.33 kills, 1.33 aces, 16.33 digs and 1.89 blocks per set while hitting .230 as a squad.
Scouting Kansas
Host Kansas is also 2-1 heading into the weekend after spending last weekend at the Middle Tennessee Invitational. The Jayhawks lost in four to Middle Tennessee before beating Xavier (3-1) and Murray State (3-0).
Kansas was 13-16 last season, including a 7-13 mark (T-8th of 11) in the Big 12 Conference, but does return five starters.
Spearheading that quintet is junior OH Karina Garlington, who averaged 3.66 kills and 1.95 digs per set a season ago. Garlington joined teammate Allison Mayfield on the All-Tournament Team after Mayfield averaged 2.55 kills and 2.00 digs per set while hitting .309 last weekend.
Kansas hits .200 as a team and averages 12.36 kills, 1.73 aces, 10.18 digs and 1.45 blocks per set.
The Coaches
Creighton is coached by Kirsten Bernthal Booth (Truman State, 1997), who owns a 107-74 record in her seventh season with the Bluejays. She became the program's all-time winningest coach on Aug. 25, 2007 with a 3-0 win over Stephen F. Austin and joined the 100-win club with an Oct. 31, 2008 win at Drake.
Booth came to Creighton after going 112-41 in three years at Kirkwood Community College in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. A native of Lincoln, Neb., Booth played volleyball at Truman State, where she was named conference MVP, an Academic All-American and Missouri's 1997 NCAA Woman of the Year. She ranked third in Division II history with 6,077 assists when she graduated.
Booth is helped by associate head coach Paul Giesselmann, assistant coach Angie Oxley Behrens and volunteer assistant Mike Weber.
Florida International is led by Danijela Tomic, who is 88-37 in her fifth season as head coach. She is assisted by Trevor Theroulde and Rose Burke.
Lipscomb is paced by Brandon Rosenthal, who is 87-102 in his seventh campaign with the Lady Bisons. Rosenthal is assisted by Samantha Sullivan.
Kansas is coached by Ray Bechard, who is 176-161 in his 12th year at the school, and 892-221 in 25 years overall as a head coach. He's assisted by Christi Posey, Ken Murczek and Kevin Buhr.
Series History vs. Florida International
Creighton has never played Florida International.
The Jays are 3-3 all-time against Sun Belt Conference foes, including wins over Arkansas State, Middle Tennessee and Florida Atlantic.
Series History vs. Lipscomb
Creighton has never faced Lipscomb.
Additionally, Creighton has never faced any of 11 current schools that make up the Atlantic Sun Conference.
Series History vs. Kansas
Creighton is 0-2 all-time against Kansas since restarting volleyball in 1994. The Jayhawks won 3-0 in both Omaha (Aug. 31, 2002) and Lawrence (Sept. 13, 2003).
The trip to Lawrence in 2003 was actually part of the Hampton Inn/Jayhawk Classic that saw CU get beat by North Carolina, Kansas and Arkansas.
Creighton is 5-22 all-time against the Big 12, including wins over Iowa State (twice), Missouri, Texas A&M and Texas Tech.
Creighton head coach Kirsten Bernthal Booth is 0-1 against Kansas and head coach Ray Bechard.
Last Match Summary
No. 6 Nebraska swept Creighton by a 25-19, 25-23, 25-16 score on Tuesday at the NU Coliseum. The victory was Nebraska's NCAA-record 88th in a row at home. Husker All-American Tara Mueller led all players with 13 kills, while Creighton's offense was paced by eight kills from Alicia Runge.
Last Weekend Summary
Creighton went 1-1 at the Bluejay Invitational, beating Texas Tech (3-0) before falling to No. 10 Illinois (3-0). The tournament marked the first regular-season competition at the new D.J. Sokol Arena on the Creighton campus.
Creighton's Jessica Houts (3.00 kps., 1.50 bps.) and Nayka Benitez (5.33 dps.) were both named to the All-Tournament Team.
Last Year Summary
Creighton went 18-9 and narrowly missed out on an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament. The Bluejays went 15-3 to finish second in the Missouri Valley Conference and had a year-end RPI of 46.
Korie Lebeda, Amanda Cvejdlik and Jessica Houts were named first-team all-MVC, while Bianca Rivera was a second-team all-Valley selection. Houts was also named MVC Defensive Player of the Year and AVCA honorable-mention All-American.
Not In Kansas Anymore
Though the 2009 Creighton Volleyball team does not boast a student-athlete from Kansas, there have been five natives of the Sunflower State to play at Creighton since the program's 1994 return.
That quintet is no doubt headlined by the program's all-time kill leader, Leah Ratzlaff (2002-05), who came to Omaha from Wichita.
Other Kansans include Great Bend native Megan Waldren (1994), Wichita native Lyndsay Olsen (1999-2002), Onaga native Liz Hagerman (2002-03) and Overland Park native Katie Kurtz (1995).
Challenging Schedule
Creighton's last two losses have come to two of the nation's top squads, as it lost last Saturday to then-No. 10 Illinois before falling on Tuesday at No. 6 Illinois.
It marked the first time in Creighton Volleyball history it had faced top-10 foes in consecutive matches.
Creighton is now 0-35 all-time against ranked opponents, a figure that drops to 0-16 vs. top-10 clubs.
Creighton has won 15 straight regular-season matches against unranked teams dating to a setback on Sept. 20, 2008 at Northern Iowa.
Another Year, Another Schedule Adjustment
For the second consecutive season, Creighton's non-conference schedule was altered due to a rare occurence out of its control.
This year, the Tulane volleyball team withdrew from the Bluejay Invitational after as many as six players showed symptoms of the H1N1 virus prevented the squad from travelling.
Last year, Creighton's scheduled participation in the Ladyjack Invitational on the campus of Stephen F. Austin was cancelled due to the fact that the Nacogdoches, Texas school's campus was located in the path of Hurricane Ike. That cost Creighton matches against Oklahoma, Rice and host Stephen F. Austin.
Houts Goes For 50
Senior Jessica Houts has started each of her last 48 matches, a streak that began Oct. 21, 2006 at Drake. Houts has started 91 of her past 92 appearances overall.
In her career as a starter she's hitting .257 while averaging 3.16 kills and 1.33 blocks. Off the bench, she hits a more effective .304 but her averages drop to 2.33 kills and 1.07 blocks per set.
Oxley vs. the Jayhawks
Assistant coach Angie Oxley Behrens didn't lose much as a student-athlete on the Nebraska Volleyball team from 1997-2000, when her teams went a combined 120-15.
Oxley's teams dropped just two sets while going a perfect 8-0 as a player against Kansas, which is no real surprise since Nebraska is 82-0-1 all-time against the Jayhawks.
New Facility Dedicated
The Wayne and Eileen Ryan Athletic Center and D.J. Sokol Arena was dedicated on the morning of August 28th in a 10 am ceremony. There was also a smaller presentation made during the intermission of the Creighton/Texas Tech match later that evening.
The facility will host the State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Tournament this November.
Back Home On Campus
The matches last weekend were Creighton's first regular-season contests on campus since playing at the Kiewit Fitness Center from 1994-96.
Since leaving the Kiewit Fitness Center, Creighton had played at five other home venues: Qwest Center Omaha, the Omaha Civic Auditorium and three Omaha high schools (Skutt, Marian and South).
Full House
Creighton has finished in the top-26 of the nation's attendance leaders each of the past three seasons, and is off to another good start this fall.
Creighton averaged 1,721 fans in two home matches Aug. 28-29, a figure that currently ranks sixth-best nationally. Below is the nation's top-10:

A Fresh Start
Between 2000 and 2008, the only freshmen to start CU's season-opener had been Brittany Coleman (2003), Carolyn Decker (2004), Korie Lebeda (2005) and Allie Oelke (2007). All four of those women went on to earn a spot on the MVC's All-Freshman team.
The Jays started three freshmen in this year's season opener, as Megan Bober, Brooke Boggs and Heather Thorson all earning a starting nod.
Crowd Control?
Creighton attracted the fourth-largest crowd in program history for Friday's home opener against Texas Tech when 2,285 fans packed D.J. Sokol Arena.
The previous largest on-campus crowd for CU had been 476 for a match vs. Evansville on Nov. 4, 1994.
The previous largest crowd for a home opener had been the 1,227 that saw Middle Tennessee on Aug. 24, 1997.
Below are Creighton's largest home volleyball crowds all-time. The top three crowds took place at Qwest Center Omaha.

Record Home Win Streak Snapped By Illini
Creighton had its school-record seven-match home win streak snapped last Saturday in a 3-0 loss to No. 10 Illinois. That stretch had started on Oct. 17, 2008 with a win over Evansville and also contained victories over Southern Illinois, Indiana State, Illinois State, Northern Iowa, Bradley and Texas Tech.
Hitting On All Cylinders
Creighton attacked at a robust .398 clip in its Aug. 28 romp over Texas Tech. That ranks as the fifth-best figure for a match in school history.
Creighton is 47-1 all-time when hitting .300 or better, including 41 straight victories.

I'll Take Houts For The Block
Jessica Houts broke Creighton's all-time block assist record last Nov. 7 against Indiana State and with 394 currently, she has flown past Ashley Williams' (2001-04) old mark of 347.
Houts claimed Creighton's total block record in this year's season-opening 3-0 win over Texas Tech. Her 456 career blocks are five more than Williams' 447, as seen below:

Freshman Setters Nothing New
For the third time in Kirsten Bernthal Booth's seven seasons at Creighton, the Bluejays began the season starting a freshman setter. Both setters on this year's roster, Brittany Moon and Megan Bober, are freshmen, with Bober earning every start so far.
In 2003 with Brittany Coleman starting as a freshman, Creighton improved from 3-23 (in 2002) to 12-18, a nine-win improvement. Coleman set a then-CU record with 1,347 assists while starting all 30 matches.
Creighton then finished 16-14 in 2005 as freshman Korie Lebeda arrived and Coleman was shifted to libero. Lebeda broke Coleman's record with 1,401 assists while averaging a league-record 13.34 assists per set.
Both Coleman and Lebeda would both go on to earn a spot on the MVC's All-Freshman Team.
Regular-Season Tournament History
Creighton is 47-54 in the 33 regular-season tournaments it has participated in all-time, including a 1-1 mark this year. Kirsten Bernthal Booth's teams are 29-21 in 18 regular-season tournaments, including five titles.
The last tournament title came Sept. 9-10, 2006, when CU won the Blue Raider Bash hosted by Middle Tennessee with wins over Saint Louis, Miami (Ohio) and Middle Tennessee.
Creighton had won just two of 16 regular-season tournaments prior to Booth's arrival.
Dandy Debuts
Nayka Benitez had 15 digs in the season-opening victory over Texas Tech, the most in school history by a player making their debut.
Fellow newcomer Alicia Runge also approached a pair of school records for a debut. Her three blocks were one shy of the record (held by current teammate Lauren Bloemke).
Additionally, Runge's nine kills were tied for second-most in CU history for a debut and the most since Heidi Higginbotham had nine in 1995.
An Even 200 Wins
Creighton Volleyball owns exactly 200 wins since restarting its program in 1994. The win over Texas Tech marked the 200th in the modern era. Kirsten Bernthal Booth has won more than half (107) of those matches.
