LINCOLN, Neb. - It was a rough opener for CU's women's tennis team, as the Jays could only manage two wins by default as Nebraska topped Creighton, 6-1, Tuesday evening at the Nebraska Tennis Center.
"It was a good measuring stick for where we are at this point in the season," said head coach Tom Lilly. "We got exposed by what will probably be the best team we play this season, but it helped us learn what we need to work on and figure out," Lilly added.
Creighton's two default victories came at No. 6 singles and No. 3 doubles. Mary Pat McMullan earned her first singles victory of the season and the team Kelsey Schmidt and Lindsey Erickson won their first match at the No. 3 doubles slot.
Mary Weatherholt started the dual for Nebraska with a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Anna Kirshenbaum. Jennifer Holmberg then nearly duplicated the first match with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Kelsey Schmidt to put the Huskers up 2-0.
Lauren Mastro pushed Wiveca Swarting in the first set, pulling to within 5-4 before eventually dropping the set 6-4, and the match. Madeleine Geibert and Abby Buxton closed out singles play with straight set victories to put the Huskers up 5-0.
After McMullan's default victory, the Huskers cruised to a pair of doubles victory. The team of Geibert and Weatherholt topped Kirshenbaum and Reddin, 8-1, followed by the pair of Holmberg and Swarting topping Creighton's Leesa and Sarah Cadwallader, 8-2.
The Jays will be back in action on Thursday against Wichita State at the Koch Family Tennis Center. First serve is slated for 1:00 p.m.
