OMAHA, Neb. - After three doubles matches went in favor of Wichita State, the Creighton women's tennis team needed a rally to get back in it. The Jays did just that, winning two of the first three singles matches, forcing the dual to a best two-out-of-three situation. Wichita responded by taking the next three matches to record a 5-2 victory over Creighton, Thursday afternoon at the Koch Family Tennis Center.
"I was proud of the way our singles played," said head coach Tom Lilly. "Our depth really showed with wins at five and six, but we have to work on our doubles," Lilly added.
The dual started with the Shockers (1-0, 1-0 MVC) taking all three doubles matches. Lutfiana Budiharto and Stephanie Dalmacio (ranked eighth in the Central Region) topped Tess Reddin and Anna Kirshenbaum at No. 1 doubles, 8-3.
Wichita would cruise in the next two matches, as Florentina Hanisch and Lenore Lazaroiu topped Leesa and Sarah Cadwallader, 8-2 at No. 2, followed by an 8-3 Iasmine Carpen/Delia Damaschin victory over Kelsey Schmidt and Lindsey Erickson.
The Jays started strong in the first singles matches to tie the dual at 2-2. After Damaschin beat Kirshenbaum 6-1, 6-0 at No. 2 singles, the Jays rallied to for the next two wins, courtesy of Erickson and Mary Pat McMullan. Erickson cruised at No. 5 with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Carpen, followed by a 6-3, 6-2 victory by McMullan over Wakim at No. 6.
Wichita stepped up after that, rattling off three straight wins to end the dual. Hanisch started things with a 6-3, 7-6 win over Lauren Mastro, followed by Lenore Lazaroiu (ranked 20th in the Central Region) topping Schmidt, 6-4, 6-3. Reddin then pushed 13th ranked (Central Region) Dalmacio to a third set, before falling 5-7, 6-1, 6-1.
Creighton will play its third dual in five days on Saturday evening when they host the University of North Dakota. Matches will begin at 6:00 p.m. at the Koch Family Tennis Center.
