OMAHA, Neb. - Creighton basketball fans came to D.J. Sokol Arena inside the Wayne and Eileen Ryan Athletic Center Friday night to take in Bluejay Madness. The approximately 2,000 fans were treated to scrimmages from both the men's and women's teams, in addition to three-point shooting and dunk contests.
The night opened with team introductions, followed by the three-point shooting contest in which a member of the men's team and women's team were paired together. The finals came down to experience, as all four contestants were seniors. The duo of Kaleb Korver and Sam Schuett defeated the combination of Kelsey Woodard and Kenny Lawson Jr., by an 18-15 edge. Korver and Schuett arrived at the finals by defeating newcomers Jahenns Manigat and Jordan Garrison 12-10 in the first round, and sophomores Josh Jones and Jasmin Corbin 14-11 in the semifinals. Woodard and Lawson advanced to the championship round after needing a sudden death win to move past newcomers Doug McDermott and McKenzie Fujan. After a 16-16 tie, Woodard's shot won the first round. Her team then topped sophomores Ethan Wragge and Ally Jensen 18-14 in the semifinals.
Following the three-point contest, the women's team played a 12-minute running clock scrimmage. The White side topped the Blue side 15-14 on a last second lay-up in transition from Corbin. Corbin and senior Sam Schuett led the White with five points each. Senior Kelsey Woodard led the Blue with seven points.
The men's scrimmage saw redshirt freshman Taylor Stormberg hit three three-pointers, two for the Blue side and one for the Black, to tie Darryl Ashford for game-high honors with nine points. The Blue team used balanced scoring to top the Black team, 28-24, as Stormberg, McDermott, Lawson and Antoine Young each had six points for the victors. The Black side was led by Ashford's nine points. Gregory Echenique added four points with a pair of dunks for the Black team.
The dunk contest, judged by the crowd, came down to a final round match-up of Young against Wayne Runnels. Each player had two rounds of 45 seconds each to complete a dunk. Young did not complete a dunk attempt in his first round, but completed an impressive slam in the second round. Runnels had an impressive jam in the first round, before a routine dunk before the clock expired to round out his night. The event was declared a tie, with Runnels winning the first round and Young the second round of the finals.
The night concluded with the teams signing autographs for fans.
