OMAHA, Neb. -- Creighton University freshman Doug McDermott has been named the Missouri Valley Conference Men's Basketball Newcomer of the Week. This is the second time in as many weeks that the Ames, Iowa, native has earned the award.
Doug McDermott averaged 14.0 points and 5.5 rebounds in two games last week, scoring in double-figures both contests.
He was 12-of-25 shots from the floor and sank all four free throw attempts.
McDermott started with 12 points and six rebounds against Louisiana in a five-point victory. He then had 16 points and five rebounds in a match-up with Iowa State, a team where his dad, Greg, used to coach.
He is Creighton's first freshman to start his season with four straight games in double-figures since Chad Gallagher in 1987-88.
McDermott is the second player in MVC history to sweep Newcomer of the Week honors each of the first two weeks of the season. Bradley's Marcellus Sommerville first accomplished the feat in 2003-04.
Creighton returns to action on Friday with 7:05 pm home game against Kennesaw State.
