OMAHA, Neb. - Freshman Carli Tritz sank a pair of free throws with 14.3 seconds left on the clock to give the Creighton women's basketball team a 63-61 win over Marquette Sunday afternoon at D.J. Sokol Arena. The Bluejays overcame a nine-point second half deficit to get by Golden Eagles and deliver Marquette its first loss of the season. Tritz and fellow reserve freshman Sarah Nelson each scored in double figures as the Bluejay bench out-scored the Marquette bench 22-0 in the win.
The win was Creighton's ninth straight at home and moves the Bluejays to 3-2 on the year. Despite receiving an arena record 32 points from Angel Robinson, Marquette dropped to 5-1 on the year.
Creighton trailed 28-26 at halftime after the first half witnessed 12 lead changes. Marquette's largest first-half lead was seven points, when it surged ahead 18-11 just past the midway point. The Bluejays answered with an 11-2 run, keyed by seven unanswered points.
In the second half, Marquette jumped up by nine out of the gates, using a 10-2 run to go up 41-32 with 13:39 to play. That was Marquette's largest lead of the day, as one of Robinson's 14 field goals in the game capped the scoring run.
The Bluejays responded to the 10-2 run by scoring six of the game's next seven points to get within striking distance of the previously unbeaten Golden Eagles. After a pair of Sarina Simmons free throws gave MU a 44-38 lead with 11:49 to play, the Jays put together a 10-2 run of their own to go ahead 48-46 with 7:38. The run featured Kelsey Woodard draining a three over the rarely used Marquette zone and a steal and lay-up by Tritz which tied the game at 46. Another Tritz steal led to a Sam Schuett jumper to give the Jays the lead at 48-46.
Creighton would never trail again, but Robinson would tie the game at 59 with 1:18 to play and the game would come down to CU's ability to hit free throws. Entering the afternoon the Bluejays were shooting just 55.4 percent at the line and heading into the final minute of the game the Jays had made 10-for-16 (.625) in the game.
After the teams exchanged missed field goals, Kellie Nelson was fouled after a defensive rebound and went to the line, making 1-of-2 shots to put the Jays up 60-59 with 44 seconds left. Robinson missed a shot on MU's next trip down the floor and Kellie Nelson again grabbed the board and again made 1-of-2 shots at the line after being fouled. Robinson would tie the game at 61 with less than 20 seconds to play on her final make of the day.
The Jays were then fouled in the backcourt by an over-aggressive Gabi Minix, sending Tritz to the line with 14.3 seconds left and the chance to be a hero. The freshman sank her first shot to put CU up 62-61 and MU called its final timeout. Tritz made her second attempt and the Jays were up 63-61.
Everyone in the building knew Robinson would attempt the game-winning or tying shot, but rather than drive the lane as she had done throughout the day, the senior all-Big East guard pulled up and attempted the game winning three-pointer with seven seconds remaining. Her miss was pulled in by Schuett and the Jays would run out the clock for their first win over Big East foe in exactly 12 years (Nov. 28, 1998 at St. John's).
Robinson played the entire game, scoring a D.J. Sokol Arena record 32 points (besting the former mark by eight points). The MU point guard made 14-of-22 field goals, went 4-for-6 at the line and was 0-for-2 from three-point range. She also led the team with three assists and three steals.
Woodard led five Bluejays in double figures with 13 points, making 3-of-6 three-pointers in the win. Schuett finished with 12 points and led the team with six rebounds and a career-high eight assists. Sarah Nelson scored seven of her 11 points in the first half, while Kellie Nelson finished with 10 points, including six from the free-throw line. Tritz scored 10 and added five rebounds and game-high five steals in the win.
Creighton made 52.4 percent of its shots in the second half, finishing at a season-best 45.8 percent (22-48) for the day. After making just 1-of-4 free throws in the first half, the Jays finished 14-for-22 (.636) at the line in the game. CU and MU were even on the glass at 29, after the Golden Eagles carried a plus-10.2 rebounding margin into the contest. MU was 0-for-6 from three-point range in defeat and shot 45.1 percent (23-51) in the game, knocking down 15-of-19 (.789) free throws.
The Bluejays return to the hardwood at South Dakota on Thursday. CU and USD's first regular-season meeting since 1988 will take place in Vermillion, S.D., Thursday at 7 pm.
