OMAHA, Neb. -- Creighton men's basketball senior Kenny Lawson Jr. has been named the State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Week. The Oceanside, Calif., native earns the honor for the first time after posting career-highs with 30 points and 18 rebounds on Saturday against Saint Joseph's in Creighton's lone game of the week.
Lawson, the Preseason MVC Player of the Year, made 11-of-17 shots from the floor, 7-of-8 free throws, had a season-best three blocked shots and also had two assists in Creighton's 82-75 win over the Hawks.
Lawson had 16 points and seven rebounds in the first half, including nine points during a 20-4 run after Creighton had fallen behind by 12 points. He had a double-double in the second half alone with 14 points and 11 rebounds, including 10 points during a four-minute stretch late in the second half.
Lawson's 30 points were the most by a Bluejay since November of 2008 and his 18 rebounds were the most by a Bluejay since 1989. He is the first Creighton player with 30 points and 18 rebounds in the same game since 1983, and the first player in the MVC to do so since at least 1991.
In addition, Lawson's 18 rebounds were three more than the previous Qwest Center Omaha record, done twice previously.
Lawson and his Bluejay teammates don't play again until Saturday, when Creighton (5-4) hosts Idaho State at 7:05 pm at Qwest Center Omaha.
