
Women's Golf Matches Best Finish Since 2005 at Creighton Golf Classic

OMAHA, Neb. -- Maggie Kersenbrock fired a season-low round of 77 to lead the Creighton women's golf team to a second-place finish at the Creighton Golf Classic on Tuesday. Northern Iowa won the seven-team meet, while North Dakota State freshman Amy Anderson led the 48-player field with a two-day total of 149.
The result was Creighton's best finish in a meet came on March 11-12, 2005 at the 8th Annual Springlake Classic, when it finished second of 20 teams.
The meet was won by North Dakota State freshman sensation Amy Anderson, who fired rounds of 74 and 75 to shoot a 36-hole total of 149. Anderson won the 2009 U.S. Junior Girls Amateur championship last summer and has now won five of the first nine meets of her collegiate career. Anderson's total was six shots better than Nebraska's Erin Sharpee, who played in the event as an individual.
Northern Iowa won the team title with a 321 total in Tuesday's windy conditions, the lowest round of the tournament. The Panthers had a two-round total of 644, beating Creighton by 12 strokes.
Kersenbrock led Creighton in the second round with a six-over 77, a loop that included two birdies. The 77 was Kersenbrock's lowest round at Creighton since she fired a final-round 73 on March 13, 2009 in the NIU Snowbird Intercollegiate.
The next-best finisher for the Jays was senior Betsy Conry, who finished in a tie for eighth after rounds of 79 and 84. Junior Ashley Norris carded rounds of 79 and 86 to tie for 11th, and rounding out the team scoring for the Jays were junior Maggy Hejlek, who tied for 16th (81-90-171) and senior Maureen White, who finished in a tie for 20th (90-85-175).
A group of three Creighton golfers who competed as individuals was led by freshman Celeste Gassman. She put together rounds of 84 and 87 for a 171 total, good for a tie for 16th place. Also competing as individuals, sophomore Jill Stuckenschneider finished 35th (101-87-188) and freshman Jaci Thode finished 45th (107-100-207).
The Bluejay women return to the course for their final meet of the spring on April 18-20, when the State Farm Missouri Valley Conference Championships are held at Rolling Hills Golf Club in Newburgh, Ind.
