Crew Takes Home Four Golds at Great Plains Championships

TOPEKA, Kan. - Creighton completed its 2010 rowing season in fine fashion at the Great Plains Rowing Championship. All six boats medaled as the squad took home four golds, one silver and one bronze medal, Saturday evening at Lake Shawnee.
The day started with the Novice 4B race. Behind for the first 1,000 meters, the Bluejays moved into third place, finishing with a time of 8:37.80.
Creighton's Novice 8 started the next race in third place behind Wichita State and Drake. The race was neck-and-neck for the first half of the 2,000 meter course. At the 1,500 meter mark, the Jays were able to make their move, pulling in front of Drake to take gold. The boat crossed the finish line with a season-best time of 7:28.00.
The Creighton Varsity 8 earned the second gold of the day in the next race, as they made their move at the 500 meter mark to gain open water. The squad posted another season-best time of 7:03.10, crossing the finish line in first place taking home the Great Plains Rowing Championship trophy.
The Varsity 4A started competition back up after a brief intermission, earning gold number three. The Jays were out in front the entire race, capturing first with a time of 7:30.10. The Novice 4A captured the fourth and final gold of the day, with a time of 7:48.20.
Creighton wrapped up the day with the Varsity 4B race. The Jays lost a close race to Drake in the last 100 meters, crossing the finish line in second place with a time of 8:46.40.
The GPRC marked the end of four Creighton seniors' rowing careers. Courtney Hanson, Katherine Cameron, Shannan Sorenson, and Shelby Takeshita all ended their careers on Saturday.
