The Series
Creighton leads the all-time series over Indiana State
with a record of 68-49. Indiana
State has taken three of
four games from Creighton this season. In their last 16 meetings, Creighton is
12-4.
A Closer Look
The series victory by Indiana
State earlier this season was just
their third all-time in Omaha,
and first since 1992. The third win this year by the Sycamores on Tuesday was
the first time they have beaten CU three times in a season since 2003. Also,
the Sycamores have eliminated the Jays from the postseason three times in their
history. Those years were: 2003, 1993 and 1986.
Four To Play Some More
That 1986 season was total Sycamore dominance. Indiana State
won all five meetings between the two teams, sweeping a four-game set in Omaha and eliminating the
Jays from the postseason.
On The Other Hand....
Creighton has eliminated the Sycamores five times from the
MVC tournament. Those years were 2005, 1992, 1991, 1990 and 1988.
Hellhake Gets The Call
With Greg Hellhake
starting
Thursday's game against Indiana
State, the Jays will be
going with an experienced arm. Hellhake has started elimination games in
both
2008 and 2009 at the MVC Tournament. In those two games, he combined to
throw
7.2 innings and allowed four runs for a 4.70 ERA.
On Base, Knight and Day
Robbie Knight is just a .289
(13-45)
career hitter against Indiana
State pitching, but still
owns a healthy .476 on-base percentage against the Sycamores. That's
because he
has been hit by 10 pitches and walked sevenother times. In those 13
games vs.
ISU, Knight has scored 13 times.
Resting Up
An injured Elliot Soto received the
rare day off on Wednesday. Soto had played in each of Creighton's
previous 135
games since sitting out a game on April 9, 2008 against North Dakota
State
during his freshman season.
No Theft Zone
One area of success in recent
years
for Creighton at the MVC Tournament has been in limiting other team's
running
games. In 10 MVC Tournament games since the start of the 2008 event, the
opposition is just 3-for-7 while trying to steal against the Bluejays.
Still Glovin' It
Creighton's defense owns a
.995
fielding percentage in the last three MVC Tournaments, successfully
handling
390 of 392 chances. Both errors came Tuesday morning vs. Indiana State.
Never Say Die
Bradley led Creighton by
three and four
runs during Wednesday's elimination game. That last time CU came back
from
deficits of three and four runs in the MVC Tournament came in the 2007.
CU
bounced back from the three run deficit in the winner-take-all
championship
game against Wichita State, answering WSU's three-run, 11th
inning
with a three spot of their own.The last time the Jays overcame a
four-or more run mark? That was against Southern Illinois
in the same tournament, as the Jays prevailed 8-5.
