"We are excited to announce the addition of John Hendry to our coaching staff. His connection to our university and program make him a perfect fit at this time," said head coach Mark Kingston. "His abilities in recruiting, and vast knowledge of all things baseball will serve our players and team very well. His addition strengthens our program and continues to build on our momentum."
Hendry is the son of Creighton legend Jim Hendry, the head coach of the Bluejays' 1991 College World Series team. Jim moved on to have a long career as an MLB executive, including serving as the general manager for the Chicago Cubs from 2002-11. He currently serves as a special assistant to the New York Yankees.
"Creighton has always been a special place to me and my family. The opportunity to join this program is incredibly meaningful. I've admired this university and baseball program for a long time, and becoming a part of it is truly a dream come true," said Hendry. "I'm extremely grateful to Coach Mark Kingston for this opportunity and for the trust he has placed in me. The vision he has for this program, along with the culture and people surrounding it, made this an extraordinary opportunity. I'm also excited to work alongside Mike Current and Billy Mohl, two of the most respected coaches in college baseball."
In his three seasons at Virginia, Hendry helped the Cavaliers to back-to-back College World Series appearances in 2023 and 2024.
Hendry pitched for the University of Indianapolis from 2016-21. He appeared in 34 games, contributing as both starting pitcher and a reliever for the Greyhounds. Out of high school, Hendry was a 32nd round pick of the Colorado Rockies in the 2016 MLB Draft. At the conclusion of his playing career, Hendry went on be an assistant coach for the Academy Park Rangers of the College Summer League in 2021. During his time as a student-athlete at Indianapolis, he spent time working in the facilities and game day operations department. In the summer of 2019, he was a football operations intern at the Indianapolis Colts training camp.
Originally from Park Ridge, Ill., Hendry holds a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Science in Sport Management from Indianapolis.
"I am so fortunate to call Omaha home," noted Hendry. "I can't wait to get to work and help Coach Kingston continue building something special for our university, players, alumni and fans."
