OMAHA, Neb. - The Bluejay Baseball team boasted yet another
draft pick on the third day of the 2010 Major League Baseball Draft, as Carson Vitale went in the 38th round to the Texas Rangers with the 1156th overall pick, Wednesday afternoon.
Vitale came to Creighton in 2009 as a transfer from McLennan Community College in Texas. He played in 46 of Creighton's 56 games, finishing the year with a .261 average, two home runs and 16 RBI.
His power numbers improved this past season, as he slugged seven home runs, and nearly doubled his RBI output with 30. On the defensive end, Vitale threw out an impressive 14 runners stealing, as he was ran on the least among regular MVC backstops.
Vitale made two stops before Creighton, as he spent his sophomore season at McLennan CC in 2008. There, he set the single season record for doubles, with 20, and played in the Texas-New Mexico Junior College All-Star Game.
His first stop was at Laredo Community College (Texas) for his freshman year in 2007. He hit .322 for the Palominos, scoring 38 runs and driving in 33 as part of an offense that was second in league in runs scored with 354.
Former Major Leaguer and Creighton alum Scott Servais is
currently the Senior Director of Player Development for the Rangers. Former Bluejay catcher Chris Gradoville was selected in the 27th round of the 2007 draft and is still in the Ranger system with the Class A Advanced Bakersfield (Calif.) Blaze.
Vitale's selection brings the number of draft picks under seventh-year head coach Ed Servais to 11. Elliot Soto was picked in the 15th round on Tuesday by the Chicago Cubs.
Creighton finished the season 27-25, falling in its third game of the MVC Tournament.
