OMAHA, Neb. -- Two members of the Creighton Volleyball team have been honored by the Missouri Valley Conference for their performance in two wins last weekend. Julianne Mandolfo was named MVC Defensive Player of the Week, while Leah McNary was named MVC Freshman of the Week.
It is the first such honor for both women.
Mandolfo added to her league-lead in digs per set, averaging 7.86 digs in seven sets last weekend. She also added three aces (0.43 saps.) and contributed her third kill of the season.
The sophomore from Omaha had 28 digs, three aces and a kill in CU's 3-1 victory over Illinois State on Friday. Ten of her digs came in the first set of the victory. One night later against Indiana State, Mandolfo had 27 digs in a three-set romp, including 12 digs in the first set. Her 27 digs were tied for second-most in CU history for a three-set match.
For the weekend, Creighton limited opponents to .069 hitting in 303 attempts.
McNary led Creighton in kills in both victories over the weekend while averaging 3.57 kills and 0.71 blocks per set while also hitting a team-high .290.
The Tarpon Springs, Fla., native opened her week with 16 kills, three blocks and two digs while hitting .289 in a four-set win over Illinois State. McNary's 16 kills were six more than her previous season-high. With Creighton trailing 24-21 in the second set, McNary had a kill and a block during a set-ending 5-0 run.
