
Men's Basketball Routs Chicago State, 95-61

OMAHA, Neb. -- The Creighton men's basketball team improved to 2-0 on the young season with a 95-61 victory over Chicago State on Sunday afternoon. Creighton shot 56.9 percent from the field and sank 13 three-pointers during its their second straight offensive barrage.
The Jays have now scored 95 or more points in their first two games for the first time in school history, and its 192 points through two contests is four more than the previous high of 188 done in the eventual NCAA Tournament campaigns of 2002-03 and 1973-74.
Creighton opened up a 44-28 lead at intermission, shooting 17-of-31 from the floor to connect at a 54.8 percent clip. The Jays assisted on 16-of-17 field goals in the opening stanza, as Jahenns Manigat, Antoine Young and Josh Jones all had three helpers. Doug McDermott led all players with 10 points and six rebounds at intermission.
CU outscored CSU 17-7 in the first five minutes of the second half and the Cougars never threatened the rest of the way. CU led by as much as 38 before settling for its largest winning margin (34) in the Greg McDermott era.
Doug McDermott made 10-of-12 attempts and Creighton with 21 points and eight rebounds, while Manigat had 15 points and sank five three-pointers for the second straight game. Also in double-figures were Grant Gibbs with a career-high 11 points and Austin Chatman with 12 points, six assists and four rebounds.
Creighton shot 33-of-58 (56.9 percent) from the floor and were 16-of-21 (76.2 percent) from the line. The Jays made 13 three-pointers on the afternoon, giving them 27 through two games this winter.
Chicago State, which returned just three reserves from a 6-26 season a year ago, dropped to 0-2. Iowa Western CC transfer Jeremy Robinson had 20 points and eight rebounds, but also had nine turnovers. Jacobby Anderson had 12 points off the bench for CSU.
Creighton will make its first road trip of the season on Wednesday with a 7:05 pm game at defending Conference-USA champion UAB (0-0).
