
Kansas Tops Women's Basketball Despite Career-High From Tritz

LAWRENCE, Kan. - Carli Tritz scored a career-high 23 points, but the Creighton women's basketball team could not overcome the hot-shooting of Kansas, falling to the Jayhawks 73-59 Wednesday night at Allen Fieldhouse. Tritz made 9-of-18 shots, but Kansas shot better than 50 percent from the field in the 14-point win.
Kansas (2-0) jumped out to a 9-2 lead and led by 17 just over 10 minutes into the game, after a Carolyn Davis layup with 9:29 left made the score 28-11. Creighton (2-1) responded with with a 14-4 run to get back within seven, trailing 32-25 with 4:26 left in the opening half. KU would reclaim a double-digit lead in the first half before owning a 36-27 lead at halftime.
Tritz scored 12 of her career-high 23 points in the first half, making half of Creighton's field goal in that span. Kansas, which made nine of its first 13 field goals, finished the first half shooting 14-of-26 (.538) from the field, 4-of-6 (.667) from three-point range and a perfect 4-of-4 from the line. Creighton hit just 10-of-28 shots in the first half, with Tritz making 5-of-12.
Creighton cut KU's lead back to single digits on four separate occasions in the second half, but could never get closer than nine points after halftime. The Bluejays forced 25 Kansas turnovers, but the Jayhawks again made 14-of-26 shots from the field in the second half to shoot 53.8 percent from the field for the game.
CU's second-half shooting percentage went down to finish the game shooting 34.3 percent, after it had shot better than 46 percent from the field in its first two games.
Tritz made 9-of-18 shots from the field, including 2-of-4 three-pointers, and added 3-of-4 free throws to finish with her career-high and game-high 23 points. Her former mark of 21 points was also set against a (then) Big 12 team, Nebraska last year in Omaha.
Sarah Nelson also scored in double figures for the third straight game, finishing with 11 points, a team-high five rebounds and career-high four steals.
Of KU's 25 turnovers, 15 came from Bluejay steals. Jordan Garrison grabbed a career-high three steals to help CU grab the season-high 15 steals.
Four of KU's five starters scored in double figures, led by Aishah Sutherland's 16-point, 14-rebound effort. Carolyn Davis, KU's National Player of the Year candidate, added 14 points in her season debut, while Angel Goodrich and Monica Engelman each finished with 12 points. KU outrebounded the Jays 40-29.
After opening the season with three straight road games, the Bluejays will return to Omaha for their home-opener next Tuesday against South Dakota. Tipoff at D.J. Sokol Arena is set for 7:05 pm against the Coyotes.
