PHILADELPHIA, Pa. -- Carl Jones had 20 of his game-high 29 points in the second half to help Saint Joseph's knock off No. 19 Creighton, 80-71, on Saturday morning at Michael Hagan '85 Arena in Philadelphia.
Saint Joseph's, which snapped a four-game losing streak in the series, improved to 7-3 on the year. Creighton, one of 12 remaining unbeatens nationally entering Saturday, dropped to 7-1.
Creighton led most of the first 10 minutes, and were ahead 15-7, before Saint Joseph's heated up. The Hawks went on an 11-0 run to move ahead 28-20, and would take a 35-30 lead into intermission. The Jays were led in the first half by 14 points by Doug McDermott, while Saint Joseph's was paced by 10 points by Langston Galloway.
Creighton pounded it inside early to start the second half to get three straight scores from Gregory Echenique. A three-pointer by Jahenns Manigat at the 13:31 mark tied the game at 39-all, but the Hawks answered with a 12-2 run and led 51-41 with 10:42 to play. The run was halted when Antoine Young drained a corner three-pointer, which also gave him 1,002 career points.
The Jays got within 53-50 on a McDermott lay-up, only to have SJU's Ronald Roberts, Jr., convert a traditional three-point play. Carl Jones then scored in transition, and Chris Wilson hit a free throw after he was fouled after a steal. That made it 59-50, Hawks with 6:34 left.
Creighton got no closer than six points the rest of the way, only to have Jones answer with a three-point play with 58.3 ticks left.
McDermott had 26 points, his seventh straight game of 20 or more points, while Young scored 15 and Echenique had 10 points.
Jones had 29 points, Roberts had 12 and Galloway 12, and C.J. Aiken finished with 10 points on the day.
