Men's Basketball Goes Cold in 69-61 Loss at Bradley

PEORIA, Ill. -- A late 7-0 run by Bradley lifted the hosts to a 69-61 victory over visiting Creighton in a game moved up four hours due to blizzard conditions in Peoria.
Bradley had an 11-game losing streak snapped in improving to 7-16 (1-11 MVC), while the Jays fell to 14-10 (6-6 MVC) with the loss.
Creighton started slow, falling behind 10-2 in the first three minutes. Bradley would make four of its first five shots, including three-pointers by Dyricus Simms-Edwards and Andrew Warren, to prompt an early timeout by Greg McDermott. The Jays would rally, tying the score at 14 on a three-ball by Kaleb Korver and taking its first lead at 17-16 on a trey by Jahenns Manigat. The teams would trade the lead five times in the first half, but went into intermission deadlocked at 25-all. Doug McDermott led Creighton with eight points and 11 rebounds at the half, while Simms-Edwards paced BU with 14 at intermission.
Bradley scored the first three hoops of the second half to go ahead 31-25, only to have CU answer with a trey by McDermott to give the freshman his fourth double-double. The Braves continued its scoring barrage as Warren scored eight straight Bradley points to go up 42-35. Creighton fought its way back at the line, making six foul shots (four by Antoine Young, two by Gregory Echenique) to tie the score at 42 with 8:35 left.
Bradley went ahead 52-50 with 5:47 left when Will Egolf drained two free throws, only to have Creighton retake the lead at 53-52 on a three-pointer by Manigat. Egolf gave BU the lead back at 54-53 with two more foul shots with 5:14 left. Creighton's Lawson missed the front end of a bonus, and BU's Warren answered with two foul shots to extend Bradley's lead to 56-53 with 4:54 left. After both teams came up empty, Manigat banked in a trey from the left wing to knot the score at 56 all and 4:06 to go.
Simms-Edwards drove baseline to score and Warren's steal and score made it 60-56 in favor of the hosts with 3:25 to play. After an offensive rebound, Bradley would call timeout, and Warren drained a corner three-pointer to put BU up seven with 2:36 to play. Creighton's Young scored with 2:03 left to trim Bradley's margin to five. Dunson was then fouled, and missed a pair. McDermott then drained a three-pointer with 1:35 left. The Jays fouled Dunson with both 1:27 and 1:07 left, and the fifth-year senior sank all four free throws to extend BU's lead to six. Warren finished off the Jays with two more foul shots in the final minute.
McDermott topped Creighton with 19 points and a career-high 17 rebounds. He also sank a career-best four three-point shots. Also in double-figures was Manigat, who had 12, and Young, who finished with 14 points and nine rebounds. Creighton shot 32.8 percent for the game (19-58), including 11-of-35 from three-point range. The 35 attempts were a school-record.
Bradley was led by 23 points and eight rebounds from Warren, while Simms-Edwards had a career-high for the second time in two weeks with 22 points. Simms-Edwards also had seven assists and six rebounds. The Braves shot 24-of-58 from the field (41.4 percent), and made 17-of-21 foul shots (81.0 percent).
Creighton returns to action on Saturday when it hosts Evansville in a 2:05 pm start. The game can be heard on KXSP (590 AM) and will be televised statewide by NET Sports.
NOTES: A blizzard in Peoria necessitated a decision Tuesday morning to move the game to a 3 pm start, instead of the regularly-scheduled 7 pm tip time ... Creighton's team was unable to fly out of Peoria on Tuesday night due to the weather, and will attempt to fly out on Wednesday, weather permitting ... Doug McDermott's 19 points and 17 rebounds give him an MVC-high six double-doubles this season ... Creighton had been 6-2 in its previous eight trips to Peoria and was seeking road wins in the three Illinois schools in the MVC (Southern Illinois, Illinois State, Bradley) for the first time in 28 attempts.
