CEDAR FALLS, Iowa - Freshman Carli Tritz scored a game-high 18 points, but the Creighton women's basketball team could not overcome a slow start to the second half in falling to Northern Iowa 60-52 Thursday night at the McLeod Center. The first-place Panthers opened the second half on a 16-3 run to distance themselves from the second-place Bluejays. Tritz scored 16 of her 18 points in the second half to keep the Jays in the game, but the Panthers captured their 10th straight win and snapped Creighton's five-game winning streak in the process.
Creighton (15-8, 9-3 MVC) jumped out of the gates as the aggressor, leading 9-2 after an Ally Jensen three-pointer nearly five minutes into the game. CU upped its lead to 12-4 on a Kelsey Woodard three-ball with 14:38 to play in the half, but those two baskets would prove to account for half of Creighton's three-point makes in the ball game, as the Jays cooled off from beyond the arc.
The Jays held on to their lead throughout most of the half, leading 25-18 with 6:04 to play. The Panthers responded with seven straight points to tie the game at 25 with 2:36 to play. Jensen canned a wide open three-pointer with 2:14 left to give the Jays their final lead of the half, up 28-25. UNI scored the final four points of the half to cap an 11-3 run it used to close the first half.
The Panthers (18-5, 11-1 MVC) snagged the final nine rebounds of the first half in helping to reclaim the lead. UNI out-rebounded the Jays 21-15 in the first half. CU made just one of its final six shots in the first half to finish at 12-for-30 (.400) in the first half.
UNI flipped the script on the Jays to start the second half, as the home team proved to be more aggressive in taking control of the game. After Tritz scored the first bucket after halftime, the Panthers would score 14 unanswered points over the next six minutes to go ahead 43-30.
The 14-0 UNI run was aided by the Bluejays going nearly eight minutes between field goals at the start of the second half. The Jays went from 19:40 until 11:48 before Tritz scored CU's second field goal of the half. By the time Tritz made her second field goal of the half, the Jays were trailing by their largest margin of the night, down 45-31.
The freshman and Iowa native kept the Jays in the game as she scored Creighton's first six field goals after half time. She accounted for 16 of CU's first 19 points in the second half, as her lay-up with 1:51 to play brought the Jays within five, down 52-47. But UNI would answer with the next five points to hold off the Bluejay comeback attempt.
Tritz finished 7-of-15 from the field, including 6-of-12 in the second half, scoring 16 of her game-high 18 points after halftime. She connected on all four of her free throw attempts and added four rebounds and two assists. Tritz was the only Bluejay in double figures, while fellow freshman Sarah Nelson added nine points. Sam Schuett led the Jays with seven rebounds and three steals.
Creighton shot 35.7 percent from the field, including just 21.1 percent (4-19) from three-point range in the loss. CU made only 8-of-13 (.615) free throws and was out-rebounded 40-31 in the game. After scoring 11 second-chance points in the first half, CU managed just one second-chance point in the second half.
UNI was led by four players in double figures, with Jacqui Kalin and K.K. Armstrong leading the way with 15 points. Kalin made 12-of-12 free throws and dished a game-high four assists for UNI. Rachel Madrigal and Lizzie Boeck each had double-doubles, with 13 points and 11 boards for Madrigal and 13 points and 10 caroms for Boeck. UNI shot 41.2 percent from the field, but made 14-of-15 (.933) free throws in the win.
