OMAHA, Neb. - On a snowy day in Omaha when most Bluejay teams were cancelling their games, the Creighton men's tennis team took the action indoors, but couldn't overcome a Drake team that had won six matches in a row. The Jays (7-6, 0-2) were swept 7-0 on Saturday by MVC foe Drake (13-2, 1-0) at the Hanscom Indoor Tennis Center.
The Jays won just one match on the day, the No. 3 doubles, but wouldn't get any points as the Bulldogs took the other two matches. Ryan Norman and Gabe Nagy were successful at the No. 3 doubles spot, defeating Cesar Bracho and Ryan Drake 8-6. In No. 1 doubles, J.T. Christian and Billy Paluch fell to Mauricio Ballivian and Anis Ghorbel 8-4, while Kyle Obermeier and Sean Mathison were defeated 8-3 by James McKie and Jean Erasmus in the No. 2 doubles.
The singles matches belonged to the Bulldogs, as the Jays only were set down in straight sets in five of the six positions. At No. 1 singles, Ballivian defeated Paluch 6-0, 6-0, while Christian fell 6-1, 7-5 to McKie at the No. 2 singles, coming close to forcing the third set.
The No. 3 singles was taken by Erasmus, as he defeated Obermeier 6-0, 6-1. Bryan Lube also had a close match at the No. 4 singles, but fell 7-5, 6-3 to Ghorbel, the reigning MVC Player of the Week.
Bracho defeated Nagy 6-0, 6-1 in the No. 5 singles, while Ryan Norman was the only Jay to push his match to a third set, but fell 6-3, 2-6, 10-5 to Drake.
The Jays will be back in action on Saturday and Sunday, April 9 and 10 when they host MVC opponents Illinois State and Bradley. Check www.gocreighton.com for all the latest information on Bluejay tennis.
