OMAHA, Neb. -- The Creighton women's golf team finished fourth at the Creighton Classic on a beautiful day for golf in Omaha. After tough, windy conditions yesterday forced high scores all around, the Jays improved their team score by 21 strokes in round two on Tuesday at Oak Hills Country Club. Tuesday's 331, coupled with a first-round 352, resulted in a two-round total of 683 at the par-72, 6,110-yard course.
The Jays were paced by senior Maggie Kersenbrock's tie for fifth place. After an 88 on day one, she carded a second-round 78 to lead the team, something she has done in every event this spring.
Sophomore Celeste Gassman finished ninth for the Jays after solid rounds of 86 and 82, while Ashley Norris and Maggy Hejlek, Creighton seniors, finished one shot apart -- Norris finished 20th with a 174, while Hejlek tied for 21st, turning in a 175. Jays sophomore Jill Stuckenschneider rounded out Creighton's team scoring. She tied for 30th after rounds of 93 and 89.
Also in the field for Creighton, competing as individuals, were freshman Emily Allison and junior Jaci Thode. Allison shot back-to-back 97s to finish in a tie for 43rd, and Thode shot 104 and 99, good for 48th place.
Amy Anderson from North Dakota State was the individual medalist for the second straight year at the Creighton Classic. After a first-round 78, she shot a 3-under-par 69 Tuesday and finished 14 shots ahead of her closest competition.
South Dakota State captured the team title with a 664. The Jays also finished behind Northern Iowa (671) and North Dakota State (676). Concordia-St. Paul (688), North Dakota (733) and South Dakota (761) rounded out the Creighton Classic field.
This was Creighton's final event before the MVC Championships on April 22 and 23 in Normal, Ill.
