OMAHA, Neb. -- After leading the Missouri Valley Conference in wins, ERA and strikeouts during the recently completed season, Creighton University pitcher Jonas Dufek was selected in the ninth round of the 2011 Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft by the Houston Astros organization.
Dufek becomes Creighton's 13th selection in the MLB draft in the eight years with Ed Servais as head coach. The draft, which started on Monday, will continue through the 30th round today before wrapping up with 20 rounds on Wednesday.
Named a third-team All-American by Collegiate Baseball last Thursday, Dufek ended his senior season leading the Missouri Valley Conference in wins (12), strikeouts (128) and ERA (2.08), as well as opposing batting average (.198) and innings pitched (112.2). He currently ranks tied for fifth nationally in both wins and strikeouts, and was named to the all-Corvallis Regional All-Tournament Team after throwing a complete game five-hitter to beat Georgia in Creighton's first NCAA Tournament game last Friday.
Dufek was also named MVP of the Missouri Valley Conference Tournament on May 28th after going 2-0 with a 0.84 ERA and leading Creighton to its second-ever tournament crown.
Dufek becomes Creighton's highest pick since Zach Daeges went in the sixth round (No. 193 overall) to Boston in the 2006 draft.
Creighton finished the season 45-16 and became the first team in program history to sweep the MVC regular-season and Tournament titles in the same season.
