ST. LOUIS, Mo. -- Creighton Volleyball's Michelle Sicner has been named the Missouri Valley Conference Freshman of the Week, the second Bluejay in three weeks to be honored by the league.
Sicner averaged 3.44 assists, 2.00 kills, 0.67 aces, 1.67 digs and 1.11 blocks per set in three matches over the weekend, hitting .205 in 44 swings. Her 10 overall blocks led the team, while her six aces, 31 assists and 18 kills were second-most on the Bluejay squad. For her efforts, Sicner was named to the Ameritas Players Challenge All-Tournament Team.
Sicner opened her week with six kills, eight assists, eight digs and three blocks in Thursday's 3-0 loss at No. 11 Nebraska.
In Friday's victory over Weber State, Sicner finished with 11 assists, five kills, four aces, four blocks and two digs. Since Creighton Volleyball was reinstated in 1994, the only other player reached all of those minimums (or better) in the same match was Melissa Weisensee vs. Evansville on Nov. 2, 1996. Weisensee had 80 assists (still a CU record), five kills, four aces, five blocks and 14 digs.
On Saturday, Sicner had a career-best seven kills to go with 12 assists, five digs, three blocks and an ace in a 3-0 sweep over Saint Mary's. Saint Mary's was among the teams receiving votes in last week's AVCA poll, and had taken Nebraska five sets the day prior.
Sicner's teammate, Kelli Browning, was named MVC Freshman of the Week on Aug. 29.
Creighton (4-6) returns to the court on Friday at 7 pm when it hosts Drake in the opening match of the Creighton Classic. That contest also doubles as Creighton's Missouri Valley Conference opener. UAB and McNeese State open the Creighton Classic at 4:30 pm.
