ST. LOUIS – Ethan Finlay and Megan Bober of Creighton University have been selected Prairie Farms / Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athletes of the Week, Commissioner Doug Elgin announced Wednesday. Finlay and Bober were honored for their performances during the period of September 12-18.
Now in its 13th year of existence, The Valley's Scholar-Athlete program is sponsored by Prairie Farms, Roberts and Hiland Dairies. On a weekly basis, the Conference honors its student-athletes for their athletic performance for a one-week period and academic success in the classroom.
A forward for the third-ranked Creighton men's soccer team, Finlay, a senior from Marshfield, Wis., scored twice in helping the Bluejays to a 3-0 victory over 23rd-ranked Providence on Saturday, September 17.
The MVC Offensive Player of the Week, Finlay, who has a 3.41 cumulative grade-point average in finance, got the scoring started by converting a penalty kick in the fourth minute for what proved to be his 16th career game-winning goal. In the 76th minute, he added an insurance tally for his team-leading fourth goal of the season.
The two-goal contest was the seventh of his career, moving him past two-time National Player of the Year Johnny Torres and into fourth place alone in school history in multi-goal matches. In addition to his league honors, he was named to the College Soccer News national team of the week.
A setter for the Jays volleyball team, Bober, a junior from Murdock, Neb., had a pair of triple-doubles in three matches, as CU defeated Drake (3-0 on September 16) and McNeese State (3-0 on September 17) but fell to Alabama-Birmingham (3-1 on September 17) in the title match of the Creighton Classic.
The MVC Player of the Week, Bober, who has a 3.791 cumulative grade-point average in exercise science, began her week with 12 kills, 20 assists and a career-high 18 digs versus Drake. After 24 assists, five digs, five kills and a career-best three service aces against McNeese State, she compiled her second triple-double in as many days, registering 11 kills, 12 digs and 25 assists.
To qualify for Prairie Farms/Missouri Valley Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Week laurels, student-athletes must carry a cumulative grade-point average of 3.20, completed at least one academic year at a Valley institution and must be at least a sophomore in academic standing. Redshirt freshmen and first-year junior college transfers are not eligible. In addition to the academic qualifications, student-athletes will be evaluated on their athletic performance for a one-week period.
