OMAHA, Neb. -- Creighton Volleyball setter Michelle Sicner has been named the BIG EAST Player of the Week, the league office announced on Monday, Sept. 2nd. Sicner becomes the volleyball program's first weekly honoree from the BIG EAST.
Sicner was named MVP of the Hampton Inn Invitational after averaging 11.57 assists, 3.43 digs, 1.71 kills and 0.86 blocks per set in wins over teams picked to win the West Coast Conference (No. 13 BYU) and Mid-American Conference (Bowling Green).
Sicner, who spent last season as Creighton's right-side hitter, nearly had a triple-double in her return to the setter position, compiling a career-high 43 assists as well as 16 digs, eight kills and four blocks on .438 hitting in Friday's season-opening win vs. BYU. The No. 13 ranked Cougars are the highest-ranked team that Creighton has ever beaten.
On Saturday, Sicner had 38 assists, eight digs, four kills and two blocks on .364 hitting as Creighton won all three sets by exactly two points against the tournament hosts.
Sicner had 10 assists or more in all seven sets on the weekend, and her 81 assists this year are already more than the 60 she had all last season.
The Bluejays (2-0 and ranked No. 19 nationally) return home this week to play three matches in the Bluejay Invitational. Creighton hosts Northern Colorado on Friday at 6 pm before playing Saturday matches vs. USF at Noon and vs. California at 7:30 pm.
