
Basketball Moves Up In Polls as McDermott Repeats BIG EAST Honor

OMAHA, Neb. -- The Creighton Men's Basketball team moved into the top-20 of both major polls on Monday as coaches and media have taken notice to a nine-game win streak that features eight double-digit triumphs.
In addition, senior forward Doug McDermott was named BIG EAST Player of the Week for the fifth time this season, and second consecutive week. The senior forward was also named National Player of the Week by NBCSports.com as well as by CBSSports.com.
Creighton (14-2, 4-0 BIG EAST) is 20th in this week's Associated Press poll, returning to the rankings after a six-week absence. The No. 20 slot matches CU's highest position of the season in the AP poll, something last done Nov. 25th. Tuesday's game vs. Butler will mark Creighton's 100th game all-time when ranked in the AP poll.
In the USA Today Coaches poll, Creighton jumped four spots to 19th place. It is the fourth week this season that Bluejays have been ranked, and one spot behind its season-best mark of No. 18 on Nov. 25th.
With today's inclusion, Creighton has now been ranked in the top-25 of the AP poll in 31 of Greg McDermott's 68 weeks.
Doug McDermott helped Creighton remain undefeated in BIG EAST play by averaging 27.0 points, 6.0 rebounds and 3.5 assists in wins over DePaul and Xavier last week. McDermott had 19 points, five rebounds and four assists in Creighton's 81-62 win at DePaul on Tuesday. On Sunday, McDermott scored Creighton's first eight points after the team fell behind 12-0 to Xavier, and would finish with 35 points, seven rebounds and three assists. He had 20 points in the second half, including nine straight as the Bluejay lead stretched from 71-65 to 77-68 in the final minutes.
Creighton plays a pair of games this week, beginning with Tuesday's 8:07 pm home contest vs. Butler that will air on FOX Sports 1.
