The Bluejays enter the final four game of the 2014 season with reaching the BIG EAST Tournament in their own hands. Creighton closes out its home schedule this week with Villanova (Oct. 16) and # 25 Georgetown (Oct. 19).
Entering the week Creighton is in seventh place in the BIG EAST Standing, the top six teams qualify for the BIG EAST Tournament. Villanova is one of the teams above the Bluejays, while the final two opponents (Butler and Xavier) are eighth and tenth respectively.
After starting the season extremely hot offensively, the Bluejays have slowed over the last seven game with just seven combined goals.
Junior Kirstyn Corder and sophomore Lauren Sullivan lead the squad with six goals each.
The Bluejays have Danielle Rice in the net, she has allowed just five goals in her last four BIG EAST matches.
Scouting Villanova (4-8-2, 2-3-0 BIG EAST):
The Wildcats enter play on Thursday night with three losses in their last four contests. Villanova's two BIG EAST wins came at Butler (Sept. 25) and over Xavier (Oct. 2).
The Wildcats have grown accustomed to playing tight contests as their all five BIG EAST contests have been decided by one goal.
Victoria Gersh leads Villanova in scoring with eight points. She holds the team lead with three goals and has two assists. The key to the Wildcats offensive, however, may be Amanda Vocelka as she leads the squad with five assists.
Defensively Emma Meyer has allowed just four goals in five conference matches for a 0.80 goals against average.
Scouting #25 Georgetown (9-2-3, 4-0-1 BIG EAST):
Tied for first place with #12 DePaul and St. John's entering the week, the Hoyas have a chance to seperate themselves as Georgetown hosts St. John's on Thursday.
Tied for first place with #12 DePaul and St. John's entering the week, the Hoyas have a chance to separate themselves as Georgetown hosts St. John's on Thursday.
The Hoyas are coming off an impressive 4-0 win over Marquette last week, which helped vault Georgetown back into the top-25.
The Hoyas are a dynamic scoring team led by the Corboz sisters and Vanessa Skrumbis.
Senior Daphne Corboz leads the Hoyas with 30 points in just 14 matches; she has seven goals and leads the nation with 16 assists. Her younger sister, freshman Rachel Corboz, has 12 points on four goals and four assists. If that wasn't enough for Creighton to worry about, Vanessa Skrumbis leads the Hoyas with eight goals on the season.
In the net the Hoyas have allowed just 15 goals on the season and just five goals in BIG EAST play. Three of those goals came in the first conference against DePaul. Goalkeeper Emma Newins has a 1.18 goals against average and will enter the match with St. John's with back-to-back shutouts over Providence and Marquette.
Thursday's Match with Villanova is a PINK OUT Game
Creighton women's soccer fans are encouraged to wear pink to promote breast cancer awareness when the Bluejays host Villanova this Thursday at the Rev. Michael G. Morrison, S.J., Stadium.
Anasi, Benson, Buckner and Nokels to be Honored Saturday on Senior Day
Sunday marks the final scheduled home match of the 2014 season, thus seniors Stephanie Anasi, Angela Benson, Madelyn Buckner and Addison Nokels will be honored prior to the match with Georgetown.
Anasi and Buckner have each played four seasons for the Bluejays. Benson has been at Creighton three seasons, while Nokels is in her second year as a Bluejay.
A Second Chance of Sorts
Five games into BIG EAST play last season the Bluejays were 2-2-1 with seven points and sat in a tie for fourth place. Just as this year the four games remaining on the schedule were Villanova, Georgetown, Butler and Xavier. Last season the Bluejays stumbled down the stretch and did not make the BIG EAST Tournament. In 2014 Creighton will look to rewrite the finish against the same quartet.
