OMAHA, Neb. – The No. 10 Creighton men's soccer team blanked No. 24 Marquette 2-0 to secure a spot in the six-team BIG EAST Men's Soccer Championship at Morrison Stadium Wednesday night.
CU received goals from sophomore Ricardo Perez and Timo Pitter in the victory. The Bluejays posted their ninth shutout of the season.
With the win Creighton improved to 5-1-1 in the BIG EAST and rank alone in second place with 16 points. CU is just one tally behind first-place Providence with two league matches remaining including a senior night battle with the Friars on Nov. 7. The Jays moved to 12-2-2 overall this season. Marquette fell to 7-5-3 overall and 1-3-3 in conference play.
Perez opened the scoring in the 30th minute. Pitter drove in from the right side and threaded a ball to the middle of the box where Perez high-kicked it into the net to give the Jays a 1-0 advantage. The goal was Perez' second of the year.
That lead would hold into halftime as Creighton's defense kept their opponents off of the scoreboard in the first half for the 16th straight time this season.
After the break Pitter scored an insurance goal in the 79th minute for the Bluejays. Sophomore Fabian Herbers controlled the ball near the top of the box and dished it left to a wide open Pitter who blasted it into the net for his sixth goal this season.
Junior Connor Sparrow played all 90 minutes in net for Creighton and improved to 12-2-2 on the year.
The Jays' control their own destiny in the BIG EAST standings with two matches remaining on the conference slate. Creighton visits DePaul Saturday afternoon before welcoming Providence on Nov. 7 for the regular-season finale.
The Bluejays travel to DePaul this Saturday. Kickoff against the Blue Demons is set for 1 p.m. CT in Chicago.
