CARMEL, IND. – The Creighton men and women's cross country teams competed in their second BIG EAST Championships on Friday in Carmel, Ind.
The Bluejay men finished fifth overall with a total score of 176. Paced by a record-setting performance from Courtney Sawle, the Creighton women finished seventh with a score of 203.
Both squads showed improvements from last year's performance in their first run at the BIG EAST Championships. The CU men's fifth place finish is an improvement over last year's seventh place finish, and its best finish at any league meet since the 2007 team placed fourth at the Missouri Valley Conference meet. The CU women improved their overall score to 203 after year's score of 228, when they also earned seventh place.
Seventh-ranked Villanova took the top spot on the men's side while second-ranked Georgetown claimed team honors on the women's side. For the second consecutive year, Villanova's sophomore Patrick Tiernan claimed victory for the men by finishing with a time of 23:45. Georgetown's Katrina Coogan led the women's field by finishing with a time of 20:31.
Once again, Sawle led the way for the Bluejay women. Sawle finished her 6k run with a time of 21:14 and placing 11th overall. The 21:14 was 10 seconds better than the previous school record that she set two weeks ago at the Bradley Pink Classic. Her 11th place finish is the best by any Bluejay woman at a conference meet since Jessica Donner was ninth at the 2001 MVC Championships.
Maddie Ivy finished second for the Bluejays with a 38th place finish and a time of 22:19. Emily Peterson's 23:08 time was enough for a 54th place finish and Emily Mauser's time of 23:25 was enough for a 63rd place finish. Sophomore Vanessa Miller finished in 66th place and recorded a time of 23:35 to round out the top five for CU.
Garrett Kenyon continued his streak of first-place finishes for the Bluejays by running his 8k race in 24:57 and earning a 29th place finish. Pat Reinschmidt finished second by finishing 39th overall and recording a time of 25:42. Drew Prescott's 25:48 time was enough for a 42nd place finish and David Rice's 26:12 time earned him a 49th place finish. Matt Piercy finished 52nd overall with a time of 26:19 to round out the top five for the Bluejays.
The Bluejays will be back in action at the NCAA Regional Championships on Friday, Nov. 14 in Peoria, Ill.
