Indianapolis, Ind. - A second half goal from senior Madelyn Buckner proved to be the difference as the Creighton women's soccer team closed the 2014 season with a 1-0 win at Xavier on Friday, Oct. 31.
The victory gave Creighton a 10-6-2 record and a 2-5-2 mark in BIG EAST action, while Xavier ended its season at 3-13-3 overall and 0-8-1 in conference play.
Head coach Bruce Erickson has led Creighton to double-figure win totals in nine of his 16 seasons with the Bluejays.
A scoreless first period of play saw the Bluejays control the tempo, firing seven shots to just three for Xavier.
Early in the second half a pair of seniors gave Creighton the lead as Buckner fielded a pass from Angela Benson and fired in her third goal of the season at the 49:54 mark of the contest. Benson set up the play by crossing a pass to Buckner for a strong shot into the left corner of the net.
Defensively the Bluejays suffocated the Musketeers throughout the game, allowing just five shots and no corners. Goalkeeper Danielle Rice recorded three saves to post her fourth shutout of the season.
“I'm proud of the way we played tonight, especially the dominant second half” said Erickson. “Our defensive effort prevented Xavier from creating many dangerous chances. It was great to see our seniors combine for a very good goal, it's a credit to the way they stuck together.”
