Volleyball Sweeps Georgetown For Sixth Straight Win

OMAHA, Neb. -- Creighton Volleyball team rolled to its sixth straight win on Saturday night with a 3-0 win over Georgetown. Scores of the match were 25-18, 25-22, 25-16.
Creighton improved to 18-7 on the year with the win and remained 1.5 games in front of its BIG EAST competition with an 11-1 league record. Georgetown fell to 9-16 (3-9 BIG EAST).
Lauren Smith led Creighton with 10 kills on .600 hitting, while fellow middle blocker Kelli Browning owned a match-high seven blocks. Creighton owned 45 kills, seven aces, 36 digs and 10.0 blocks while hitting .337 in the win.
Terese Cannon paced Georgetown with a match-high 11 kills, while Emily Gisolfi owned 15 digs as the Hoya libero. Georgetown finished with 36 kills, no aces, 41 digs and three blocks on .206 hitting.
Smith led Creighton in the first set with five kills on seven swings, including the clincher on set point. Creighton broke free from a 13-13 tie by scoring seven of the next nine points en route to the 25-18 victory. Senior setter Michelle Sicner had 15 of her team-high 30 assists in the opening frame.
Creighton appeared well on its way to a 2-0 intermission lead after building a 21-13 lead late in the second set. But Georgetown fought valiantly, tying the score at 22-all on a kill by Casey Speer. Following a Creighton timeout Bluejay freshman Marysa Wilkinson took over, sandwiching blocks around a kill to help CU earn the 25-22 win. Browning had five blocks in the second set on a night that saw her become the second player in CU history to surpass 500 career block assists.
Creighton got three aces from Ashley Jansen in the third set and would win going away, 25-16, to earn its second straight sweep. Leah McNary had four kills and CU hit .448 in the stanza.
Creighton will play on the road next weekend with matches at Xavier on Friday and at Butler on Saturday, with both contests starting at 6 pm Central.
NOTES: Creighton has won 74 straight matches when up 2-0 at intermission at all sites and 44 straight home matches when taking the first set ...
