
Men's Basketball Falls to Ole Miss

NICEVILLE, Fla. -- Martavious Newby had seven points in the final two minutes as Ole Miss used a game-ending 12-3 run to defeat No. 23 Creighton, 75-68, at the Emerald Coast Classic in Niceville, Fla., on Friday.
Creighton falls to 5-1 on the season, while Ole Miss improved to 4-1 after the first meeting in series history between the schools.
Creighton trailed by as much as 16-10 in the first eight minutes before unleashing a familiar three-point barrage that nearly buried the Rebels. CU scored 14 straight points, including three free throws by Isaiah Zierden, a trey from Zierden, and consecutive trifectas from Devin Brooks, to build a lead as large as 27-18 with eight minutes left in the first half.
Creighton would later withstand a five-minute drought without a field goal as Ole Miss trimmed the Bluejay lead to 33-29 in the final 90 seconds of the half before CU took a 37-31 lead into the intermission. Zierden had 12 points in the first half, while Brooks and Austin Chatman each had nine. Jarvis Summers led all players with 14 points for Ole Miss at the break.
Ole Miss started the second half strong and took a 41-39 lead with 16:24 left when Summers banked in a deep three-pointer to beat the shot clock, but Creighton answered. Chatman drained a corner three-pointer and Brooks followed with a floater to make it 44-41 Jays with 15:26 to go.
The teams exchanged leads six times in the closing minutes. A pull-up jumper by Summers gave Ole Miss a 63-62 lead with 3:51 left. CU would answer when Brooks sank a contested jumper. After a defensive stand, Toby Hegner made 1-of-2 foul shots as CU led 65-63 with 2:13 remaining before the Rebels rallied.
Creighton would leave Newby open from 3-point range, and he drained a go-ahead trey with 1:50 left. After a missed free throw on CU's end, the Rebels built a 68-65 cushion when M.J. Rhett's jumper dropped with 1:03 left.
Creighton's only points in the final two minutes were a circus shot from Chatman as he banked in a three-pointer from the corner to get CU within three points with 19.7 left, but Ole Miss would make its final four shots at the line down the stretch to pick up the upset.
Zierden led Creighton with 18 points, making 5-of-8 three-pointers. Chatman had 15 points and six assists, while Brooks had 14 points and a pair of steals. Creighton made 13-of-31 three-pointers for the game and shot 44 percent overall from the field. The Bluejays outrebounded Ole Miss 27-25 and had 15 assists against just 12 rebounds.
Summers had a game-high 23 points for Ole Miss, while LaDarius White scored a season-best 18. White carried Ole Miss for much of the second half, scoring 16 of his team's 18 points from the 11:34 mark to the 4:40 mark. The Rebels shot 52.1 percent from the field and 90.5 percent from the line while owning nine assists, eight turnovers and nine steals.
Cincinnati defeated Middle Tennessee, 69-51, in the game before Friday's finale. Creighton meets Middle Tennessee at 5 pm on Saturday in a game that will be video webcast at www.emeraldcoastclassic.com and on the radio on 1620 The Zone.
