OMAHA, Neb. -- Aaron Bright had a career-high 22 points and Dane Pineau and Brad Waldow had double-doubles as Saint Mary's snapped Creighton's 24-game home win streak with a 71-67 overtime victory in Omaha on Saturday afternoon.
Creighton fell to 8-3 with the loss, while Saint Mary's improved to 6-1 this season while winning its first road game of the season.
Austin Chatman had 19 points for Creighton, while Isaiah Zierden (17) and Devin Brooks (12) also finished in double-figures.
Bright had 19 of his 22 points after halftime, picking up where Kerry Carter left off. Carter had 17 of his 19 points in the first half, including five three-pointers. Pineau had 13 points and 10 rebounds (both career-highs) off the bench, while Waldow had 11 points, 11 rebounds and tied his career-high with five assists. He was held to half his season scoring average of 22.8 points per game on 2-of-10 shooting.
Creighton led by as much as eight points in both the first and second halves, but could not put away a tested Saint Mary's team that has won 25 or more games in six of the previous seven seasons.
The Bluejays led 13-5 early, only to see Carter drain a three-pointer on three straight possessions to draw the Gaels within one.
The teams were tied at 27-all at the half, but CU opened up a 37-29 lead after a 10-2 run that featured a pair of Zierden three-pointers. Just as quickly, Saint Mary's responded with a 13-0 run as it held CU scoreless over the next 6:29. Pineau had seven and Bright five points during the rally.
The teams traded the lead six times in the final 6:36 of regulation. A three-pointer from Zierden with 1:29 left gave CU a 61-59 lead, but Bright's one-handed runner with 1:01 to play evened the score.
Chatman would miss a three-pointer from the corner on CU's final possession of the game, and Treaven Duffy would jar the ball out of Toby Hegner's hands to give the Gaels a shot to win it with the shot clock off. Bright's three-pointer from the top of the key hit the back iron, as CU went to overtime for the second time in five days.
Hegner would drill a three-pointer with 3:01 left in overtime to give Creighton a 64-62 edge, but Pineau countered with a lay-up to tie the score. Pineau, Bright and Waldow each scored on the visitors's next three trips, giving SMC a 70-64 lead with 32.6 seconds to play.
Chatman would sink a three-pointer with 12.9 left, but Bright sank the second of two free throw attempts with 10.8 left to make it a two-possession game. The Gaels then got a stop on CU's final possession to clinch the four-point road win.
Creighton returns to the court next Friday when it hosts Texas-Pan American in a game that tips off at 8:01 pm.
