Doug McDermott Goes 11th in NBA Draft to Denver; Traded to Chicago

BROOKLYN, N.Y. -- The Denver Nuggets made Creighton All-American Doug McDermott the 11th overall pick in the 2014 NBA Draft on Thursday night at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, N.Y.
Seven minutes after the selection was announced by commissioner Adam Silver, ESPN basketball reporter Jeff Goodman reported that McDermott would be traded. That trade was later ratified by the NBA and announced 98 minutes after McDermott graced the stage and shook hands with commissioner Adam Silver. It has McDermott and veteran forward Anthony Randolph heading to Chicago for the 16th (Jusuf Nurkic) and 19th picks (Gary Harris) in the 2014 draft, and the lesser of the Bulls' two 2015 second round picks (Chicago's and Portland's).
McDermott is the third player in Creighton history to become a first-round pick in the NBA Draft, joining Benoit Benjamin (3rd overall in 1985) and Bob Portman (7th overall in 1969). Those three men are also the three highest draft picks overall in school history.
The selection of the 2014 BIG EAST Player of the Year gives the conference 102 all-time first-round picks and stretches its' streak to 35 straight years with at least one first-round choice.
Ten players previously selected with the No. 11 overall pick have gone on to become NBA All-Stars, including Hall of Famers Reggie Miller, Gus Johnson and Jamaal Wilkes.
McDermott won 14 National Player of the Year accolades during a senior season that saw him lead the Bluejays to a third straight Round of 32 NCAA Tournament appearance, as he topped the nation in scoring with 26.7 points and added a team-high 7.0 rebounds per game. He's also been nominated for an ESPY as the "Best Male College Athlete", an award that will be announced next month.
McDermott finished his career fifth in NCAA history with 3,150 career points and was the first male to be named a First Team All-American by the Associated Press since 1985.
Creighton is coached by Greg McDermott, Doug's father, who owns a 107-38 record after four seasons with the Bluejays.
