Women's Tennis Opens Fall Season at Drake Fall Invitational

Senior Jennie Hartjes picked up a singles win and a doubles victory with sophomore Katherine Nelsen to lead the Jays on the first day of competition.
Hartjes advanced to the second round of the Flight A singles draw after a 6-1, 6-3 over Christina Colarossi of Milwaukee.
In doubles, Hartjes and Nelsen drew a first-round bye. They later teamed up for an 8-5 victory over a duo from Northern Colorado in the second round of the Flight A doubles bracket to advance to the flight semifinal.
Two CU freshmen picked up their first career singles win at Creighton on Friday. Natalie Miller doubled up Jacqueline Baude of Omaha 6-3, 6-3 in a Flight C first-round match. Classmate Ashley Monaco needed three sets to get past Nina Barudzic of South Dakota 7-5, 2-6, 10-4 in Flight D.
Junior Karlin Naslund picked up the Jays' other singles victory on the day. Naslund bounced Northern Iowa's Savanna Hunt 6-3, 6-3 in Flight C.
Three Creighton doubles duos picked up victories after setbacks to begin the day.
Miller and Naslund defeated an Upper Iowa tandem 8-2 in a Flight B consolation match. Monaco and sophomore Simone Hussussian knocked off a duo from Omaha 8-2 in another Flight B consolation contest. Junior Sam Anderson and senior Amanda Noonan posted another 8-2 victory over an Upper Iowa team in a Flight A consolation match.
Ten Bluejays were in action on day one of the Invitational. Second-round singles action and third-round doubles main draw play continues on Saturday as well as consolation action throughout the day at the Roger Knapp Tennis Center.
