
Bluejays' Men's Soccer Earns 1-0 Win Over Western Illinois

OMAHA, Neb. - Powered by the first goal of the season from junior Brendan Hines-Ike, the eighth-ranked Creighton men's soccer team downed Western Illinois 1-0 on Friday, Sept. 5.
The win lifted the Bluejays to 3-0-0 on the season, while Western Illinois fell to 1-2-0.
Following a scoreless first half, the Bluejays broke out on top in the 50th minute as Hines-Ike gathered his own shot then put home the game-winner at the 49:27 mark. The play began on a Creighton corner sent in from the right side by sophomore Fabian Herbers. The pass sailed into the center of the box, where Hines-Ike headed a shot to the left. Western Illinois got a team save to keep it scoreless for a moment, but Hines-Ike gathered the rebound and pushed a shot past Leatherneck goalkeeper, Yves Dietrich for the win.
Bluejay net minder, junior Connor Sparrow, extended his Morrison Stadium scoreless streak to 495 minutes since enrolling at Creighton prior to the 2013 season.
Creighton outshot Western Illinois 21-3, while the Bluejays won the battle of corners, 6-1.
Creighton returns to action on Sunday, Sept. 7 as the Bluejays host Cincinnati in Morrison Stadium at 12:30 p.m.
