Women's Basketball Downed at DePaul, 96-71

CHICAGO, Ill.- The Creighton women's basketball team suffered a 96-71 defeat at DePaul on Friday, Jan. 23.
The loss dropped the Bluejays to 9-10 on the season and 2-6 in BIG EAST play, while DePaul moved to 14-6 overall and 6-2 in conference action.
DePaul scored the first nine points of the contest, but Creighton responded with a 6-0 run on buckets from freshman Jade Owens, senior Alexis Akin-Otiko and sophomore MC McGrory.
The Bluejays moved within a bucket moments later, 14-12 (11:38), on back-to-back buckets from Owens and Akin-Otiko. DePaul, however, responded with 10 of the next 12 points to push its lead out to 24-14.
Creighton rallied back within striking distance once more with six straight via four by Akin-Otiko and a running jumper from Owens to make it 24-20 (7:57).
DePaul countered with a 12-2 run, 36-22 (5:10) and closed the half with a 10-2 burst to take a 49-28 lead at the break.
Creighton was 0-for-10 from three-point range in the first half, while DePaul hit seven of 12 from that distance.
DePaul put the game out of reach with lethal shooting touch in the first four minutes, going 8-of-10 in the first four minutes to push the edge to 31 (67-36) with 16:10 left.
Junior Marissa Janning led Creighton with 15 points, while Akin-Otiko finished with 14 points.
Owens and sophomore Lauren Works each closed the game with eight points.
DePaul's Brittany Hrynko posted a game-high 27 points, while Chanise Jenkins finished with 16.
Creighton continues its road trip on Sunday, Jan. 25 as the Bluejays battle Marquette at 2 p.m. in Milwaukee, Wis.
